backfiring means you have an air leak or a lean mixture. Look for leaks at the header pipes or perhaps a crack in the exhaust.
Cold air getting into the exhaust is usually what causes the backfire noise.
You may have a lean engine running situation but the bike would have other issues besides the backfire.
Let me know if you are having any other issues or if it just the backfire.

The gas tank is under the seat. To get to the air filter, you have to remove the speedometer chrome cover and the upper side covers.
I can do mine in about 10 minutes. I also have a '07 with 17000 miles on it now.

hi,if iremeber the drain plug for the sump is at the rear of the motor and is a horizontal one,so watch it when the oil comes out it goes a long way and makes alot of mess on the floor,i cant remember the quantity of oil to go back in,but about 3ltrs springs to mind,there is a sight glass on the right hand rear of the r/h engine casing so you can get it dead right,dont use a fully synthetic oil,the clutch will not like it and will start to slip,and for the life of me i cant remember where the oil filter is,although i normally only replace the filter every second oil change anyway,check with your local dealer to find the location of the filter..nice bike though i had a 1500lc and did over 50000mls on it trouble free,look after it and you will have a good run out of it for years..cheers

to determine that, you will need a voltmeter and a battery charger. first, put battery on level surface and check to see if the acid is at a good level, if not, you will have to get some at a parts store and refill it to level indicated on the side. fully charge the battery over night with the charger taking the battery out first. the next day, disconnect charger and write down voltage obtained from voltmeter. next, install battery on motorcycle and try to start it. if it's starts, use voltmeter to check voltage at battery while running engine, write it down. let it run a few minutes like 20 and shut it off. check voltage, if it droped, your alternator is not charging. if it's the same as when you first tested it at 12 volts, you might be good only if you had to refill it, if not, the battery is defective and must be replaced.
