What would cause a 2005 vstar classic 1100 not start when the starter is engaged and why would it sound as if the engine lost its compression and how would i go about finding out what the proublem is

Hi, Anonymous the starter drive/Bendix/clutch is a mechanical gear driven component that engages the clutch pack ring gear to turn over the engine. It has an internal mechanism that allows the gear to turn in one direction and once the engine starts allows the drive gear to free spin. If gear free spins in both directions then the drive gear has failed, it is not serviceable and needs to be replaced. 97 roadking wont go into gear while engine is not running and in neutral, starter just spins

The starter clutch needs to be replaced. An alternator sgop will usually rebuild these for 1/2 of a new one. .A thumbs up would be greatly appreciated if this answer is helpful to you. Good Luck.

Starter works but gears seem to free spin, wont crank engine

sounds like the sprag clutch has failed. If you can see the large gear that sits behind the rotor and its turning but the rotor isnt turning the sprag clutch has failed. Very costly. usualy you would have a missed start eg not engaging every now and then before this fails all together.
