How do i remove starter from Harley Davidson 2003 sportster 883

Remove the negative battery terminal or the ground cable to case connection and then remove the primary cover and then remove the two starter mounting bolts and washers with a ball hex driver. THEN remove rear exhaust pipe, remove the positive battery lead and solenoid wire from the starter. Remove the starter and gasket from the right side of the motorcycle.

INSTALLATION procedures:

Install starter and starter gasket from the right side of the motorcycle, then attach the positive battery cable and solenoid wire to the solenoid and from the left side install the two starter mounting bolts and washers and tighten them to 13-20 ft-lbs which is 18-27 Nm. Then reinstall the primary cover, fill it to the proper level with primary chaincase/transmission fluid/oil and then reconnect the battery ground and re-install the rear exhaust pipe.

1974 sportster starter turns but does not engage

Your starter drive or "Bendix" is bad. Disconnect the battery, remove the outer primary, remove the starter solenoid and pull the starter drive shaft, with the Bendix on it, out. Clamp the starter drive shaft in vise with soft jaws and remove the nut on the outer end. It has left handed threads. Replace the starter drive with a high quality unit such as ACCEL. Avoid the cheaper Chinese units as they don't last. Reassemble your bike.

Good Luck

How to remove starter on 1976 sportster

To remove the starter motor from you Ironhead, look at the rear of the starter motor. There are two "nuts" holding the end cap on. These are not actually nut but very long bolts. By removing these two bolts, you can pull the starter out of the starter drive housing.

But, the long bolts also hold the starter together. You have need to be careful when you take the starter out as it will fall into four pieces. The front bearing plate, the armature, the field windings, and the end plate with the brushed on it. If you're not familiar with fooing with starters, the brush plate can be confusing to get back on the end of the starter.

The starter on your '76 Sporty should be the Hitachi type starter.

1979 sportster.Starter spins but does not engage

I had a 67 & a 77 Sportster 25 years ago & helped a friend build custom fuelers in his shop part-time thru the 90s. I don't have manuals anymore, but I'll help with what I can.

Your starter is under the battery cage and the batt cage is under the seat. You need to disconnect the batt cables & remove the batt. If you have a lot of custom add-ons like lightrails & saddlebag mounting gear you may need to remove some of the accessories to get to your starter.

With the battery out you should be able to see the starter underneath the batt cage although you might not be able to see much depending on your bike's details. The large ground wire attaches to the side of the starter field winding with a bolt and the case grounds it to the rest of the bike. You may be able to remove the starter without removing the cage but most likely you will get better access by removing it first. Depends on the tools you have and your specific setup as to what might be in the way.
There are 2 bolts to remove the starter from the gearbox, but you might have additional stabilizer brackets on the starter to contend with too.
You have one of 2 problems- either the solenoid isn't kicking the gear out to the clutch hub gear or the gearcase has a problem keeping the starter gear from engaging. You'll have to remove the gearcase clutchhub cover to get to the hub gear assemblies.

Most likely to fail is the solenoid and you can often clean up the copper disc with emery cloth or flip it over if badly pitted to renew the solenoid.
Good luck and keep us posted- hope this helps.

1997 Sportster won't start

Check the battery, try jump starting with another battery or power source, removing the plug is reducing the compression making it easier for the starter to spin. I suspect your battery or starter doesn't have the jam to spin the motor.

Starter removal

It's quite a process to remove a starter on a sportster. I changed one for my friend on his 03 sportster. You have to take alot of stuff off to get to the bolts that hold it on. Can I suggest getting a service manual for the bike. Trust me it's worth its weight in gold. I've done alot of work on my sportster and my friends sportster and would never attempt anything without the book. As far as the starter, From what I remember, I had to remove the exhaust pipes then the primary cover, and I'm sure there were more parts, but you need to know what gaskets you will need to replace. Good Luck. And go get the book. I got mine at Barnes and Noble. and my friend got his at the Harley dealer. Have fun.
