First off, if you are going by the idiot light, it COULD be a bad sending unit.
Either replace with a new one and check again, or hook up an oil pressure gauge (At 2000 RPM you should have 30-38lbs) to get a more accurate reading:

IF is is still ACTUALLY low, pull the relief valve spring and make sure its clean and nothing it blocking it from seating correctly.

A cracked cam plate could also cause a loss of oil pressure.

Finally, make sure that the oil line fron the oil tank to the pump (feed line) isn't plugged.

What is happening is the oil is thinning out from the heat, and although is still supplying lubrication, it is too thin to register much oil pressure on a gauge, if any at all. What are you using for oil? Weight and brand? I'd recommend Castrol 20w-50 dino oil if you want to see more pressure on the gauge. I have been through what you are experiencing, and this is what I found out. Harley oil was always disappointed in the pressure department, but there were no worries because, the Harley engines were low pressure, high volume designs at the time, now they are high volume and high pressure, at least until the oils heats up and thins out, the pressure will drop, but the volume will stay where it should, insuring proper lubrication. I would listen for the lifters and valves to be clacking and clicking, if they are not, I would not worry. I could go on forever but I hope I have conveyed that you are probably OK. I would change the oil more often in the hot weather, especially if you do a lot of miles in the heat.

Most likely problem is a badly fitted seal/gasket this can cause the oilways to be blocked, take it back and get the technician to check it.This is an easy thing to do, because of the fine tolerances in the oil pump. A motor rebuild is a real pain and I'm sure the shop would rather not pay for a new motor.

2004 passat engine sounds like a deisel all of a sudden and has some engine lag


Hi, depending on engine fitted it is most likely the cam chain tensioner has collaped or failed. On a twin cam engine like a 1.8 t or a 32 valve V6 there is a chain driving a second chain in the rear of the cylinder head. These chains are tensioned by a oil pressure pressurized piston pushing on a bridge under the chain.

If it collapses, the chain/s become very loose and you will hear a loud clacking noise. It can also collapse due to low oil pressure.

VW is familiar with this problem and the repair involves first checking oil pressure, cold thro' warm. If it is around 85 to105 psi cold and 28 to 35 psi warm at idle, then this indicates tensioner piston is faulty or tensioner guide has broken off.

If oil presssure is good and engine is running synthetic oil...as it should ...then tensioneris suspect. I have also seen these engines with the screen under the tensioner partly blocked . If on removal of valve cover prooves tensioner has collapsed or guide shoe broken or warn then a new tensioner must be installed.

If oil pressure is too low at under 12 psi at warm idle then oil pump is worn and/or engine is worn. Also low oil pressure can be caused by fuel in the oil making it very thin.

If the screen under the tensioner is partly plugged up, then the oil pan must also be removed and cleaned out otherwise plugging will happen again.

To remove and install the tensioner a SST ( Special Service Tool.) is required to compresse the tensioner piston to allow it to be removed from under the cam chain and again compressing the new tensioner to be installed. Cams or chain do not need removing on this job.

Most import shops can handle this as long as they are equipped with the SST tensioner tool.

In my first attempt to change my engine oil, I drained oil from bottom of my 2001 Fatboy, from the plug on the right side towards the front of the engine, just below the Twin Cam Cover and floor board,...


I'm not that familiar with the Twin Cam engine but from what you're saying, Harley has a drain or something in the cam chest of the Twin Cam engine. This is something new for Harley as the previous engines had no means of draining the cam chest. I would imagine that this is what the oil you saw was, oil in the cam chest waiting to be pumped back to the oil tank by the oil pump that is located in the cam chest. When you restart the engine, this area will again fill itself to the proper level.

"Oh, and now I can\'t even read the oil level on my dipstick due to the fact it is significantly LOW" This is not a good sign. Now, my expertise is NOT on the Twin Cam bikes but I do try to help when I can. In your case, if your engine were an earleir Evolution or Shovelhead engine, I'd say that you had sheared a scavenge gear drive key in the oil pump. Now, I do not know a thing about the oil pump in a Twin Cam as I've never worked on one. It sounds like your oil pump is not scavenging (sucking) the oil out of the engine and pumping it back to the oil tank. Once the pump pumps the oil into the engine, it stays there. Thats why you're seen the "massive amounts of oil spitting out of the little hoses behind the air cleaner". Take your bike to a dealer or qualified shop as soon as possible and I'd refrain from running it. An engine full of oil would also expain why the engine does not want to run as well.

Ok, I'm not exactly sure what the problem is on your Twin Cam but I can assure you that it is oil pump related. One the earlier models with the external pump, you had two pumps in one body. One pump was a "feed" pump that pumped oil into the engine. The other pump was a "scavenger" pump that pumped oil out of the engine back to the tank.

When Harley designed the Twin Cam engine, they employed a better design of pump inside the engine. It's located in the gear case along with the cams. I do not know too much about the Twin Cam engine as I specialize on the older Evolution, Shovelhead, and Panhead engnes. The older engines had a breather gear that used the crankcase pressure built up inside the engne to blow the oil from the crankcase into the gear case. I don't know if the Twin Cam still uses that method of getting the oil out of the crankcase and into the gear case.

So, with my limited knowledge of the oil pump on the Twin Cam, I'd say that this is the problem. You need to find someone that is familiar with the construction of the pump. It may be that the entire pump is bad or something as simple as a sheared pin.

The bike is a 06 streetglide when you throttle the bike under load the oil pressure drops what would be the cause


I don't know too much about the oil pumps in the Twin Cam engines. I have never worked with one of them but I've got extensive experience with the older type pump used on the Shovelheads and Evolution engines.

A Harley engine employs a high volume low pressure oiling system. The old Shovelheads would actually show no oil pressure when idling hot with most gauges. The oil pressure switch would cut the light off at four pounds of oil pressure. A Harley engine will not hold a lot of oil pressure because the engine is built using roller bearings instead of shell bearings.

As long as the tappets are not rattling, you don't have a problem with oil pressure. If your oil pressure drops too low, the tappets are hydraulic and they will rattle like hell. There will be no doubt in your mind as to the problem.

Now, back to your question as to why the oil pressure on your bike drops when accelerating under a load, I have no idea.

has any work been done under the hood recently???? most likelty the cam ****** must be reset. if the distributor has been moved at all, it will have tot be reset, with a scanner.

if it is electrical oil pressure sensor I would start there. The best way to see if you have a major problem is to use a mechanical oil pressure tester. Take off the oil pressure sensor and put the mechanical tester on. The tester should come with a Gage. If it comes within your trucks oil pressure range than all is fine and replace the sending unit and see if that don't help your problem.If the tester runs high then the oil pump is bad or your cam-bearings could be the problem. But with cam-bearings you would usually get a low reading.

replace oil filter bypass (the boss that the oil filter screws to)... other than that ..oil pump failing...main bearings out of spec not allowing oil to stay under pressure and reach the upper valve train...good luck
