SOURCE: I have a 2004 Duece

Did you check your front belt pulley? These pulleys are made of relatively soft cast iron as compared to the final drive gear. This is so that the easily replaced and relatively inexpensive front pulley wears before the difficult to replace and expensive final drive gear wears. The pulley will wear in the splined inner bore and will get loose on the final drive gear. Then transmission oil will run out of the pulley and down the inner primary. This is because of the lose of pressure on the "Quad" ring behind the pulley spacer. This may be your problem.

Another mistake a LOT of people make when replacing any seal is putting the seal up dry. On the inner primary seal, you want to put a bit sealer compound around the outer edge of the seal where it goes into the case. Although there are a lot new sealants out there, I still prefer good Permatex non-hardening. Once you get the seal in and straight, oil the inner seal surfaces and the bearing race. If you put the seal up dry, you start the engine, the mainshaft turns about 1000 rpm. This will burn up the delicate rubber lips on the seal almost instantly because of friction before the oil can get to the seal. You MUST lubricate the seal or it WILL burn up before you can blink an eye.

Also check the position of the inner primary bearing race. It must be 0.100" from the final drive gear. If it's way out of position, the seal may not be riding properly on it.

If you are in doubt about whether the transmission is leaking or the primary, refill the primary with a quart of automatic transmission fluid, the red stuff. It will work long enough for you to determine whether it's the transmission leaking or the primary leaking. If it's the transmission, check the front belt drive pulley for wear, You'll usually find that the large nut that holds it on is loose.

Good Luck
Steve

SOURCE: how do i drain the gear oil out of my 01 fxstd

there is a drain plug that sits just above the rear shocks underneath the bike.
you will need a shallow 5/8 socket on a short wobble extension with a 3/8 ratchet, and (Harley part number 11105 drain plug o ring and 99851-05 Harley "formula +" one quart)
the plug is located towards the front of the shocks and slightly over to the left or low side of the bike.
loosen drain plug just a little bit and get the socket out and use your fingers to pull it the rest of the way out.
also be sure to use your fingers to thread it back in so you do not cross thread the plug ( that is very easy to do)
replace the o ring and fill transmission filling it to the top line on the the dip stick wich is on the high side of the bike on the "trap door trans cover" where the clutch cable goes into.
you will need a 3/8 Allen wrench to take that out and be sure to just only snug the dip stick back in place so you don't damage the chrome or aluminum when taking ot out again

What kind of transmission oil should I use for a FXSTD 2000

Your bike came with H-D Syn3 20W50 synthetic engine oil in the engine, primary case, and transmission. There are many other brands of oil that can be used however. Go to their websites and check for their recommendations. Personally, I like the H-D semi-synthetic primary and transmission lube made for the earlier bikes. I think the transmission runs quieter with it in there.

I have a 1999 fatboy what oil do I use in engine, trans & primary?

On a '99 Fatboy, you can use H-D Syn3 20W50 engine oil in all three locations. But, you can use most any lubricant you wish as long as it meets Harley's specifications. Amsoil, Royal Purple, Mobil V-Twin, just check the manufacturer's website for compatibility. On the Evo engines, I use H-D or Mobil V-Twin synthetic 20W50 engine oil. I use nothing but H-D transmission and primary lubricant in those two locations.

Need to know engine oil type and transmission oil type and capacities for 2004 fxdwgi

Your bike came new from the factory with Harley-Davidson Syn3 20W50 synthetic engine oil in the engine, transmission, and primary. You can change brands of any oil you wish but go online and see what the manufacturer recommends. Some other manufacturers of lubricants are Amsoil, Royal Purple, Mobil, Golden Spectro, and RevTech. Just follow their recommendations. The engine holds approx. 3 quarts, the primary holds approx. a quart, and the transmission holds 20-24 ounces. Always check the level with the dipstick once you change the oil. The dipsticks have two marks on them. The upper mark is "FULL HOT" and the lower mark is "FULL COLD". Do not overfill.

I would like to know what weight oil i need to put in my 2002 sporsters crankcase

A Harley Sportster, and their Big Twins for that matter, do not have oil in the crankcase. They are what we call "dry sump" engines in the fact that they carry their oil in a seperate remote oil tank.

On your Sportster, you can use Harley's Syn3 20W50 oil in the oil tank. There are other manufactures that make fine oils suitable for your engine but you'll have to check their websites for their recommendations. Amsoil, Royal Purple, Mobil V-Twin are a few.

On the transmission and primary, I'd use H-D semi-synthetic primary and transmission lubricant. There may be other brands that are available as well.

How often should i change tranny fluid, 3000 mi, 5000 mi, ?? I'm running Harley oil now do U recommend synthetic oils.

If you're running Harley oil, you're running either semi-synthetic or full synthetic. You bike came with H-D Syn3 20W50 fully synthetic oil in the transmission. They use the Syn3 in the engine, transmission, and primary now. You can use whatever you like. Amsoil, Royal Purple, and Mobil make oils that are suitable for this use but you'll have to check their website to determine which one they recommend.

Primary takes 1 quart and tranny takes 20 ounces unless you have a six speed. Six speed takes one quart.

Best oil for the primary and secondary?

I don't know what you are referring to when you say "secondary". The best engine oil is the H-D Syn3 20W50 oil. You can use most any oil you want as long as it has the proper API rating. I think Harley requires a "C" rating on their oil for use in diesel engines.

For the "primary" case and transmission, I use H-D Primary lube for Sportsters if I can find it. Harley had changed over to another name for the Sportster oil.

Now, there are several other manufacturers of lubricants that are suitable for use in your Sporty. Manufacturers like Amsoil, Royal Purple, Mobil, and a few others. You'll have to go to their websites to get a list of what to use where.

Good Luck
