First thing to do is to check the shifter pawl adjustment. If you do not have a service manual then you need to get one. It will explain how to adjust shifter pawl and save you money on many other problems down the road.

Hi, Jim if you can put it in gear with the engine off and it rolls forward like it's in neutral then it's time for some diagnostic surgery. For this scenario you will need your service/owners manual if you can not find the best tool you ever bought for your Harley, despair not, for a mere zero $0 you can download another one. Last week my 2000 Road King Classic passed its MOT but the Neutral light stays on all the time and I cannot engage neutral at all via clutch/footpeg control. I have installed a brand new neutral...

The source of your problem is "a friend of mine". Sorry, but you will have to spend real money at a shop where they understand the problem and can fix this. I'm a certified HD tech. Paying someone like me to work on your bike is worth the money. Having an expert named "my buddy" doing it for free costs you nothing but grief.

When i engage eiather 1st or 2nd gear from neutral bike seems to grab and make a clunk noise, once rolling no problems

Older 4 speed transmissions were known for their "clunk" going into 1st gear.

However, even though you didn't give a model year, I'll assume you mean something newer than those.

If it "grabs" when going from neutral to 1st (bike wants to "jump"), it usually means the clutch push rod (under the primary cover's "Derby cover) needs adjustment, followed by the clutch cable.

As far as the leak where the cable enters the transmission, there is an "o-ring" seal that might need replacing.

My dad has a difficult time finding neutral on his 99 road king classic. is there a way to adjust?

I have a 99 FLHT. The issues are the same with finding neutral. This was because of a gear design change in the tranny to supposedly make the trans quieter.
So that said, do this, while in 1st, clutch pulled in, rev (blip throttle) motor slightly with upwards pressure on the shift lever. This blip breaks the friction between the plates in the clutch pack taking the pressure off the trans gears which helps get it into neutral.
BTW, this issue was present in my 1990 Softail as well, what worked then still works now.

1997 Yamaha YZF 1000 clutch and/or transmission problem?

well this is something that is as you said " not normal" i would guess that clutch is smoked. after it warms up do a 3rd gear roll on at about 45 mph. if you drop the hammer and the motor revs and you don't go anywhere stop the ride and R&R your clutch
something else to make sure of is that you clutch fuild is good and has no air in the line
Good luck

BMW R1150GS 8 years old, 5700 miles. Trouble engaging 1st gear

I have the same problem with my 2002 1150 (18,000 mi) I just bought last week. I roll it forward a bit as I put it in 1st from Neutral at a stand still. I don't know if that is the right this to do, but it works for me.
