Sounds like you were running on battery power alone, instead of off the alternator.Check your alternator system and battery. Charge your battery, check the voltage, start it, ride it for 10 minites at over 2000 rpm, and shut it down. Recheck the voltage, and if it has dropped below 12 V, your alternator/regulator isn't putting out what it should. Check your owners manual for specs. It' probably has nothing to do with your starter relay or system.

SOURCE: when i press the start button it doesnt do anything

If you can hear a click then your solenoid sounds like it is working.First you should check your battery voltage and if not over 12v charge your battery and this should solve the problem. If not it could be your starter and you can come back to me.

Please do though leave positive feedback if I have helped

Thankyou

My car is sputtering and dying. If I try to restart it, it will immediately go into sputtering/dying mode. If I wait a while an hour or so it will start up and drive fine.

When was the last time that the carburetor was stripped and cleaned? Also have you checked the fuel filter? Finally, the problem seems to come and go as the engine is run (and it gets hot) check that the fuel line and any electrical cables are well away from the hot engine as far as is possible.

could be a lambda sensor or coolant sensor, it could also be the ignition coil hall sensor (distributor) or MAF sensor. Coolant sensors are the cheapest but my money would be on the lambda sensor

Sputters then dies

Most likely a lack of fuel, check the fuel filter first.

Battery

Usually, if the battery is dying, it won't start up again.
Usually, motorized vehicles only use the battery to start the engine, then the alternator contributes all the power for actual operation.
A dead alternator or battery shouldn't 'sputter', they would just stop dead.

If the engine will start, run and then sputter...there is a fuel problem.
1. There may be a 'cut-off' in the fuel line which is in the off postion. It may look like a thin, flat wing-nut.
2. The gas may be contaminated with water residue if the gasoline has been sitting a long time. I believe you can get some water treatment to fix this without having to dump the fuel tank contents.
3. The fuel line is blocked with dirt somewhere, I would check the fuel filter and work backwards from there.
