2001 Road King Classic EFI model sputters on hot days

I commutte 50 miles everyday, I have no problems in the morning when the air temp is fairly cool, however in the afternoon after riding for about 45 minutes the bike sputters just as I open up the throttle at about 30 mph in third gear or if I open it wide open, the problem is more noticeable on hot days.

2001 road king efi as im driveing down the road at a constant speed it spits and sputters but if i give it more throttle it runs fine.

This could be a number of things. First off you need to display DTCs if there are any. Some things will not set codes but always start diagnosis by displaying any codes if there are any. This sounds like a fueling problem. Check your air filter first and then pull and check the plugs to see if you are running rich or lean as either could be the problem and further diagnosis will be greatly assisted by knowing if it is one or the other.

My 06 Road king runs really rough in the mornings. Backfires and has very little power. In the evening it runs great. Just had a new fuel pump installed yesterday. Told that was the problem. Evidently not....

Usually the air temp is cooler in the morning and more humid. I don't know virtually anything about the electronic fuel system in the bikes these days but I'd suspect one of the sensors connected to the fuel system. Your bike does not know what time of day it is. It may have a temp sensor on it though.

Shuts off spits and sputters

Check for vacume leaks first. Rubber lines..gaskets to carbs ect. Also remove and blow out your fuel line to tank and change out filter. Hope this helps.:)

High idle below 72 degress

If this is still a problem. I had a similar issues with my 06 Road King. Mine ran extremly hot and the idle was horrible too. On cold mornings five miles in I had to get off the bike because it felt like I was going to burn up. Two years dealing with Harley dealerships, who were completely worthless, and nothing. I even got to the point I told them to come pick the bike up I was not making anymore payments. Well that did not work.

I called a chopper shop, PeteG's in Longwood FL, told them what was happening. I had the carb drilled out, a new breather put on, and pipes (of course those were what the hell). Anyway, since the work was done, I don't run hot, my idle is normal, and fuel consumption has improved by almost six miles per gal. I just hit 43 mp/g this week. Since the repairs were comlpeted about three weeks ago I've put almost 1500 miles on the bike no problems yet.

One note... Do not deal with Harley if your bike is out of warranty. Ask around and find the names of some independant shops. Ask them. The benefit is they usually will give you a straight answer and two they cost a lot less.

Hope this helps.
