Question about 2001 Yamaha V Star 1100 Classic

1 Answer

Bike doesn't start with the clutch pulled in.

I have a 2001 Yamaha V Star 1100. Since I have owned the bike, it has never been able to start with the clutch pulled in. The side stand switch works and is operational. The clutch switch itself is intact. When I jump the wires to simulate the clutch being pulled, it still doesn't start. I have no idea where to go from here. Any help is much appreciated!!!

It is not normal for the bike. I have only had the bike 4 years and the previous owner told me that it used to start with the clutch pulled in, he just never got it fixed.

Is the bike in gear when you depress clutch and try to start? Should be yes

Depressed clutch is an in gear safety.

In neutral, clutch position would be out.

Just for the heck of it, Put bike in gear, side stand up. Hold front brake, depress clutch and bump starter button. What happened? It should have cranked. ??

    Please provide specific information.

Bike in neutral, don't touch the clutch: Turn over? Start?

Bike in gear, don't touch clutch: Turn over? Start?

Bike in neutral, clutch pulled in: Turn over? Start?

Bike in neutral, don't touch clutch: Turn over? Start?

Same tests again, with sidestand up and sidestand down.

    What are the results?

If this behavior is normal for this bike, what makes you think there is anything wrong?

Push start the bike in gear. accelerate to about 10mph. Slam on rear brake hard. Try a few times as necessary.

2006 Yamaha V Star 1100 Silverado the starter motor is working but the bike won't turn over

Hi, Anonymous your starter motor is not/was not the problem that dubious title goes to the starter drive/Bendix/clutch which is a separate component that is activated by the starter motor it is a mechanical gear driven part that engages the clutch pack to turn over the engine. It has an internal mechanism that allows the gear to turn in one direction and once the engine starts allows the drive gear to free spin. If gear free spins in both directions then the drive gear has failed, it is not serviceable and needs to be replaced. Rpms speed up faster then bike does. Sounds like clutch slip.

You can adjust it by slackening the cable...unless it has hydraulic operation....Otherwise get it replaced before you do more damage..ie clutch dust and debris in the oil, so dont forget the oil and filter change too.

2005 v-star 1100 wont start . starter spins but

i worked for a large yamaha dealer. yes, those bikes are very well known for the starter clutch going out. it's about $85 to $125 in parts and about 1 to 1.5 hours labor. also, an oil filter relocator kit will save you money on servicing or changing your own oil.
