I had problems with it twice and in service they just solved it by cleaning the valve of carbon.

  • cernuus May 19, 2009

Yes I have this bike. And no they don't force me to their service. When they found the problem (carboned valve) i saw it, they cleaned it and it was ok for a while. They told me to drive with more RPM but its hard when I drive in the city, not on the track. The repair took about 20 minutes and they didn't charge lot of money for that but i wanted to try myself this time.

Ok this picture should give you an idea whats exhaust valve (part nr. 3):

  • cernuus May 19, 2009

Yeah i know that four stroke would be better in town but sometimes I want to have fun on some mx tracks and in country (field roads, forest) and 125ccm four stroke wouldn't have enough power for this. My Aprilia dealer should have service manual but i think they dont. Anyway i found service manual for Rotax 122 (which should be engine of my bike) where is this valve cleaning described.
Thx for your time and motorex oil tip. Cya

Is your bike a 2008 Aprilia RX 125? If so the only thing getting cleaned is your wallet. This sounds like the dealers service department is bilking you for repairs that are not needed. Get back to me.

Okay, I am confused. The Aprilia RX 125 has a two stroke, single cylinder, water cooled engine. Exactly what "valve" are they cleaning? I would like to contact the service department and get educated on this valve situation. I want to better understand what they are doing. It may well be a legitimate repair but I need more information. Could you give me the service dept. phone number? I will get back to you with what I find.

By the way, the dealer should be able to get you a service manual.

Okay. Here's the deal. You actually have a 2009 model shipped in 2008. The 2008 and earlier models had a plug where you now have a valve. You are riding a full blown race bike in the city. The valve effectively changes the exhaust port timing for race performance. I have not see the valve because it is a new feature, and yes, the bike needs to see the track on occasion.

The valve can get gummed up with carbon and not move freely in and out. About all you can do is to go to a synthetic engine oil like Motorex. Your dealer may stock this brand. Most KTM dealers stock it. You can also Google "motorex oil" and find a source.

At least I am not nuts. I just didn't know the newest bike had the valve. You would be better served to trade the bike in on a commuter bike designed for city use. You would be happier and the bike would be also. A Yamaha YZ125 four stroke air cooled bike would be perfect. Thanks for the opportunity to get educated on what Aprilia has done. Again, the dealer should be able to get you a service manual.

Please rate this solution. Thanks cernuus! :)

It is very easy to clean valve,
Remove screws and washers (12, 11)
Prise valve body (4) out very gently being carefull not to damage gasket (7) and the valve plate (3) will also come, if very tight a small drop of wd40 gets it moving.
I usually clean mine still attached to cable as hardest thing i find is trying to connect cable to valve after being detached.
Once valve is free from cylinder clean with something non abrasive i find wd40 and a cloth works fine never scratch surface of valve.
I usually install mine and squirt wd 40 around it and work back and fore in cylinder to clean gum out of port
Re-install valve with flat side of plate facing up and tapered side facing down.
Also check solenoid (what is conected to opposite end of cable) is moving freely if not wd40 will get it moving and spray grease will keep it from sticking.
Start bike up and get warm then watch solenoid at around 3000 rpm it opens and closes on a self clean cycle and should always do this if it doesnt get cleaning asap because the longer it is left the harder it is to remove valve
