Engine seems to run rough and backfires when let off gas

Engine starts ok. sounds like it is not running on all cylinders at various speeds.

backfiring usually means you are running lean. I would clean the carbs and re-adjust your air/fuel mixture.

SOURCE: Hard starting when cold, runs rough at idle and any steady speed.

Your carburetors need to be cleaned. The pilot jets are at least partially plugged.

If you are comfortable doing this yourself, you need to remove the seats, fuel tank, and air induction system before you will be able to get the carbs out. Be carefull when removing the fuel tank, there is a wire harness that will need to be un plugged from it to remove it. The wire harness plug runs under the plastic tray under the seat. There are 3 plastic rivits that will need to be removed to get to the plug. The carbs come out as a pair, and can be tough to get back in the boots.

You need to remove the float bowls, remove the jets, and blow carb cleaner and compressed air through them all. The pilot jets are most likely the only culprit, but you might as well clean everything if your going to all the trouble. You should also blow carb cleaner and compressed air through all of the other passages while your at it. Make sure that you can see through the jets and there is no debris left in them. Make sure to clean the floats, needle valves, and float bowls as well.

Then re-assemble

This happens when the bike sits for long periods. The fuel we get now days has a very short shelf life before it goes bad. Fuel oxydizes over time, and it happens even faster in a small amount that is vented which is exactly as it is when its in the carburetors of a motorcycle. When fuel oxydizes and evaporates, it leaves a gummy mess behind. The pilot jets are the smallest passages that sit in the fuel, so they naturally plug first.

You can prevent this by keeping fuel stabilizer in your fuel when ever the bike will be sitting for long periods of time. Myself personally, when I store one for the winter, I like to leave the carbs empty.

Hi Willem, i have just found your page & read about your problem :- It sounds to me that if it runs OK with petrol taps turned off - It means that the rear cylinder is getting too much fuel, probably nothing more than a sticking Float Needle, a common problem, or at worst a leaking Float. I do not know any bike details yet as i am just looking to buy one so am not sure of the Specification. If the rear cylinder is flooding it will mean that fuel will probably exit the carb overflow pipe, good luck, Stuart, Bournemouth UK. ps. if you have any helpful hints or tips on buying an XV1600 Wild Star the same as yours, please mail me back.

To me it sounds like the coil is breaking down and not working at higher RPM's. You can take them off and have them tested at a service shop.

Turns over slow, backfires , then starts.replaced battery, starter is ok. replaced plugs. what else?

If the unit runs normally after it starts it is probably a defective coil that isnt changing timing relative to crank speed. It is running advanced even at slow speeds and that is the backfire. You could also have a slightly bent flywheel key. This is what sets the primary timing so it is always a good idea to check it when you have the engine cover off!

1992 Lumina Backfire - I have a 1992 Lumina Euro, 77K miles, 3.1 V-6. Under moderate to hard acceleration the engine will backfire and you can smell gas. The spark control module, coils, wires, plugs,...

I know you mentioned the EGR valve has been replaced, but you may have a bad 'new' part. I know the car is electronic, but has anyone checked its ignition timing (timing belt been looked at, I know it only has 77k on it). Is the fuel pressure regulator OK and it vacumm supply?

Loud bang, then drop in power, now car running rough!

Get a compression tester and find out if you blew a cylinder. You'll need to test all cylinders. Your most likely running on 7 cylinders instead of 8 or 5 instead of 6 if you have the V-6.

You should get the codes checked and start from there. My Kia Sportage was also backfiring and running rough, after checking the codes. It had misfires on two cylinders. I did a tune up and had to replace one of the ignition coils. Now it runs great!
