02 Triumph Thunderbird 900 motorcycle won't start, It starts, runs normally when I bump start it, only clicks when i try to start it, replaced the battery and solenoid no change. What's my next step?

Hi Rob, you may have a faulty starter relay or the starter itself could be bad, the first thing I would do is a voltage drop test. Start at the battery and record the voltage with the key on, then check the ignition switch, then the starter relay, then the starter button to solenoid wire. There should be no more than .5-volt difference at any point in the starter circuit. For more information about your question please visit the website below. Good luck and have a nice day.

The above link is one of the best explanations of the starting system on a bike that I have seen. Not a Triumph, I know, but using all the information he gives is a great help in trouble shooting. I would recommend watching his other videos because he explains it all in real easy to understand ways.

Trouble shoot a 2007 honda crv starter

Take the starter off for testing. If the lights were normally bright, and went dim when key was in cranking position, it means the start circuit is working-battery power is going to the starter, but it won't do anything. The starter motor is probably bad.
Good luck.

I have a yamaha xvs 650 dragstar converted to a trike it has been stood for 3 months. when i try to start it there is a fast clicking but the the engine does not turn over but will start easy with a bump...

bike needs a new battery. battery is no longer capable of holding a full charge no matter what a trickle charger says. batteries wear out over time. expect 2-3 years from a motorcycle battery.

the clicking sound you hear is the relay flipping between open and close as it tries to get the right amount of amperage to turn the starter.

Puma wont crank.

Lights dimming a good clue, that means that there is power going to the solonoid but starter moter wont turn. Check all battery connections and starter connections Make sure battery has enough power to turn starter or try jumper cablea.
Sometimes the starter gets jambed up due to poor lube on the bendix. try hitting the housing with a hammer. You can take the starter out and bench rebuild or just replace it its not a hard job,

Starting issues

replaced with a new one. i hit the start button motor will barely turn over. i am lost. its doing the same thing as the old battery which was new last year. sure culd use some input. almost forgot also tried to jump alsojust dose not have enough balls to roll the moter overit tries but no go.what does it sound like when it is turning over? like the starter motor is really straining, or like the starter motor is really slow and lifeless? is the head light bright or dim? could be the engine is siezing up, but I doubt it. if you try to pop-start it (get it rolling on the street in high gear w/ the clutch in, then hop on and release the clutch), does the engine turn over? I'm willing to bet it's somthing simple, like one of the battery leads or leads to the starter is loose or damaged and not enough current is getting through.,,,
