Question about 2000 Harley Davidson XL 1200 S Sportster Sport
Riding home from a poker run yesterday the engine light would come on and the bike would just start cutting out and backfiring at speeds about 40. I pulled over and the oil light came on too. I checked oil and level was fine. Re-started the bike and it would idle fine and engine and oil light were off. Hit the road again and everything was running fine. Then on the 25 miles left to get home I would feel it start to sputter, the spedo would drop to 0 and the odometer would turn off and the engine would shut off. This would only last for less than a second or two. Then everything would be fine again and compression would get the engine running again and everything would come back on. The bike only has 4800 miles. The guy I bought it from last fall had it stored for a few years. And it was not ridden much. I also just put new hand grips on it. So I am wondering if I am having problems with the kill switch
If it was stored with fuel in the tank:
1. The fuel filter should be replaced
2. You may to replace the fuel delivery system coming out of the tank
3. Remove the plug in the carb and reset the idel mixture
I just bought one store for 6 years - my issue is the bike will n ot idel but runs on the road like a bat out hell.

Did you put a new battery in it? If not have it load tested and replace if needed. Check the grounds and make sure they are clean and tight. Check the stator by going to the plug on the right front down tube, with a muti meter take a reading with the bike running on the side that goes back toward the engine, I forget the values but you should get a reading at idle and then as you rev the motor the reading should climb. If all of the above check out OK the problem will be your voltage regulator.
