1998 and UP Twin Cam FLSTF's only require 3 qts. Dump in 4 qts. and you run slower (wet-sumping), may cause leaks, or even blow out filler cap at higher RPM's. Ain't you boys got no manuals?

Oil quantity need for oil change on 05 fatboy engine transmission and primary

The engine take three quarts, the primary takes 38-44 ounces, and the transmission holds 20-24 ounces. Check the oil in the engine oil tank with the bike on the side stand. As long as the oil is between the lines, do not add oil. When you change the oil and filter, start the engine for 15 seconds and then check the oil. On the primary, stand the bike straight up. Remove the derby cover and fill the primary until the oil comes just up to the bottom of the outer clutch shell. Do not overfill. If you do, the clutch will drag and you will not be able to find neutral with the engine running. Check the transmission with the bike straight up as well. There is a dip stick on the plug where you add the oil. Make sure the oil level is between the lines.

Good Luck

Hello I have a 1999 Harley Fatboy and I need to know if the same three Oil Compartments explained by the CycleSurgeon apply to my 99 as well. Also, the dealership sold me a high grade synthetic oil and...

Yes, your '99 Fatboy, has the last of the Evo engines in it. They didn't come out with the Twin Cam 88 B engine until 2000. Still, you have three oil compartments, the engine, the primary, and the transmission.

And yes, you can run the H-D Syn3 oil in all three compartments. The engine holds three quarts, the primary holds about a quart (fill to the bottom of the outer clutch drum), and the transmission uses 20-24 ounces.

I hope this answers your questions.

Need information on the changing of engine, primary and transmission oils on 2006 883L sportster

Drain the oil tank by taking the hose loose that plugs onto the frame on the left side of the bike right behind the engine down low. Look underneath the engine and you see a small plug that screws into the primary cover from the bottom. This plug uses a Torx wrench to remove it.

Change the oil filter. This is a messy job as oil pours out of the filter as you unscrew it from the engine. Install the new filter and tighten. Add three quarts of oil to the oil tank of the engine and one quart of primary/transmission oil to the primary. The primary and transmission are lubricated by the same oil. I think the later model bikes came with Syn3 oil in both places.

Your looking at 2.8qts for the engine add another 1/2 quart or so for the filter. Always put a little oil in and then add till full. Use the amounts identified as a guide to how much oil to have on hand. You primary may use 22 - 28 ounces, and your tranny a little less than a quart. so have at least 5 quarts available for a complete fluid change (and filter) and you should be good to go! Hope this helps.

Just changed oil 2009 fatboy. only took a quart. is this rite?

Whatever fluid you changed, it wasn't the engine oil. The transmission and primary chaincase both hold about a quart. Looks like you have a job to finish. If you want to do minor service yourself BUY AN OWNER'S MANUAL!!! They are only $20 from a dealer.
