In the trunk or at the trailer hitch connector.Just look at the wires going to the brake light bulbs they only power up when brakes are applied.

My 2006 FXDI tail light doesn't work changed bulb no change. Looked on wiring chart found a wire labeled BE what is it and what color

Hey Larry
Black wire is usually the ground on 12 volts systems... ??.. Does the brake light work??.. this is important... tells me if you are getting voltage to the socket when the brake is applied..(the socket should be good then!).. BUT > we are going to do some diagnosis.
1. Double check the bulb,, if its a 1157, you can have a brake light and no tail light...
2. The socket may not be holding the bulb in tight (vibration) and causing the issue...
>> You need to get a friend to help with this diagnosis!!<<
3. (key on) Take a multimeter (set to 12volts - or more) and (CAREFULLY) see if you get voltage between the two contact points in the socket when someone pushes down the brake pedal. WATCH the needle or digital readout for results,,If you have voltage at the socket - good, ..brakes off...NOW Turn on the lights, You should get voltage for the tail light also. If not, time to check the socket connections (make sure the wires are seated in the back of the socket)... (What has happened up to now? - Do you have power to the socket?. Is so, then you have pin pointed the problem.."bulb or bulb connection")
Now>> KEY OFF and no brake.! Set the multimeter to resistance (ohm) and put the needle into the back of the socket (this might not be possible due to some recent waterproofing improvements - so you might have to trim a LITTLE slice of insulation off each wire) touching a wire ( or connector) and then touch one of the contacts inside the socket, you should get ZERO resistance ..do all possible combinations. You should get ZERO between the wires and their respective contacts..(this will eliminate the socket itself as the problem) ...
4. After you have done these checks.. Please reply to me..we'll go further.. Thanks.

What color are the wires for trailer brakes on a 2004 Ford E350 and where are they located

trailer brake wires are normally piggybacked from the rear tail lights. Check either side and look for extra wires at a light assembly

My brake lights do not come on when i press the brakes. i have changed the switch for the brake lights but I still get nothing, which wire do I need to change because the brake light wire on my 2000 Esteem...

If you have a meter.... check the bulb socket for 12V DC with someone applying the brake or watch for a 12V DC pulse on the meter when the meter leads are on the socket contact with the emergency flashers on. (+) lead to socket contact and ( - ) lead to chassis ground. If you have the 12V DC on the socket contact then there is a problem with the chassis ground wire.
The brake light socket has 2 terminals. One is for the tail light 12V DC power when the headlights are on and the other one is 12V DC only when the brake lights are supposed to be on. (i.e pulse hazard or brake applied light on)

Also check the BRAKE light fuse in the fuse box located on the front of the left kick panel wall drivers side with a black cover. (4" x 2.5") There is also a fuse and relay box on the left side of the engine compartment. (4" x 7")

The wire color connected to your NEW brake switch that leaves the switch for the tail lights is the same color on the rear of the car and terminates at the tail light assy quick disconnect connector.

Thanks for using FixYa.
