Question about 1990 Honda GL 1500 SE Gold Wing

1 Answer

I recently bought this 92 Goldwing that runs great and looks great. the fuel mileage averages about 28 mpg. I have cleaned the carbs, put in new plugs and new air filter however the mileage is still about 28 mpg.Is this normal or do I have a problem.

28 is a little low, but not exceptional. If you're riding 70+ mph a lot I would say that's about right. Stop and go traffic probably normal. 50 mph interstate traveling I'd say it is too low and I'd be checking the balance on the carbs again.

You should be getting around 40 to 45 mpg
has to be in the carbs.

The estimated mileage is determined under optimum conditions. You are close. I would just drive it.. You are 92-93 % of estimated of estimated fuel usage. The sticker ad is estimated mpg.. the estimated usage is under CAFE rules.

Average feul mileage is only 9.4 mpg./why?

Could be a combo of components that are causing your poor fuel mileage.
Dirty air filter is the 1st thing to check - after that.
1) Oxygen sensor
2) Knock sensor
3) EGR valve
4) Spark Plugs/ Wires/ Ignition components
5) Restricted Exhaust

I have recently bought a Jeep Cherokee 2.4 Sport petrol (2005) and believe that the fuel consumption is excessive. It was serviced and MOTd from a reputable company on purchase but I only average 352...

Unless you have an engine light on, the first thing I would check is tire pressure. You should run at least 35 psi. Tire size can make a big difference also, smaller is better. If you have very large off-road tires, you will pay for poor rolling resistance. Use skinny, tall tires for better mileage. The other obvious item would be the air filter, make sure it is new every 10,000 miles. The computer is programmed to deliver fuel for an expected amount of air delivery, if the air can't get through, it will run rich and get poor mileage and performance.

Buick regal 92 3.8L Horrible fuel mileage

Sounds like you might have an oxygen sensor problem. Your catalytic converter(s) maybe defective or dirty. That in turn can dirty up the oxygen sensor. A defective oxygen sensor will send faulty info to the computer, interpreting the fumes as cold (even when the engine warms up). That causes the computer to adjust the fuel mixture to very rich, giving you poor gas mileage and the fuel smell. Hope it helps.

2007 kia rondo seems to use alot of gas

I have the same issue of low gas mileage. My 2008 Kia Rondo with V6 (2.7Lt) gets 20-21 mpg in average. Even for highway mileage, it is around 21-22mpg. Very poor gas mileage. Disappointed. I hope it would improve in the future.

Poor gas mileage on 2008 Ford taurus

Are you using the correct grade of fuel.
Manufacturers claim that a car will do 28 to the gallon.
This is done under ideal conditions at a constant speed on a rolling road.
Wind, hills, overtaking and tire pressures will decrease fuel mileage.
Your car is ok. Don`t expect much more unless you want to drive at 56mph
good luck
