I first read the codes and they came up 71, 72, 73, 74, 9, 68. I replaced Spark plugs/distributer cap and rotor, now it is only code 73 coming up. I check all the plugs again and all were white except for the 3rd which was dark brown. i swapped the third plug wire with a friends working plug wire. no change. It idles pretty rough, but drives fine. any suggestions what this could be? should i change the fuel filter? something to do with the catalytic converter? is it running to lean? vacuum leak? no sure where to go from here..
Okay, a Honda. I don't see a code 68 for that though. Code 9 is number 1 cylinder position sensor-this sounds like a crank position sensor? That may be the problem.
If you have multi port injection, check that injector 3 is pulsing and putting gas into the cylinder.
A new fuel filter wouldn't hurt, but I doubt it is causing a problem in only one cylinder. Check for vacuum leaks. Change the plug for #3. If still no help, check fuel pressure. Doesn't sound lean, either, although if fuel pressure is low, it might be. Spark plugs that are white is an indication of lean running, BUT I doubt that your plugs have been run long enough to determine that.
Testimonial: "is there a test i can do for a faulty Crank position sensor? i have taken it for a 15 min drive with the new plugs, but that was before I changed the distributor cap and rotor. maybe next Ill check for the vacuum leak and swap the third plug. the plugs were all pretty white except for the 3rd one"
Yes, code 67 is "cat. converter system". Guess you will have to check that. Doesn't necessarily mean it is bad, the cat, sometimes the code is set when it is just a little under par performance, like 95% efficiency. Bang on it, if no rattles might be alright, just under performing.///There should be a test for your crank sensor, sorry, I do not know it though. You would probably have to consult a repair manual, Travis.
i will give it a few love taps for sure. I have three things to do now! thank you for the help! i will be able to try these out tomorrow after work. I will let you know how i fair.

SOURCE: 95 GMC Jimmy 4.3l W vin rough idle
My problem was solved when I repaired my 4 wd activation dash switch. The switch was contacting on 2WD & 4HI at the same time. The front differential activation is vacuum activated possibly creating a tug of war that didn't actually engage it but drained off vacuum from the engine? A theory at best but stumbbled across it because I knew the switch wasn't working properly I repaired it and low and behold rough idle disappeared and all is good for 3 weeks running.

You never replace anything, on a Wishing,Hoping,Pushing,Poking, diagnostic approach
You learn the vehicles Systems,Test, then Replace,if you have a failed component.
Work on the Misfire Issues.
Then you lean O2 Codes will go away.
Not a the plugs.
Think lean---Vacuum leaks,EGR Valve leak,EVAP System leaks, anything with a hose that lets air into the intake system.
Exhaust System leaks,near sensors
SOURCE: what causes 2000 taurus engine rough idle but no codes
I had a head gasket going when I have a rough idle. Just weeping coolant past the number 1 cylinder. When I pulled the head the piston was all shiny and steam cleaned. $500 dollars all good now.

Hi Travis , I want to help you with your problem, but I need more information from you. Can you please add details in the comment box? Year, make, and model? What is codes 9 and 68,can't tell without make of car. Dead spark plug? Sometimes you get a defective one.
sorry i thought i had that written some where. its a 2000 honda civic sedan. brand new plugs. and my fault on the code. its code 67 NOT 68. 67
You can use a spray bottle of water, or a can of carb cleaner to check for vacuum leaks at the intake manifold gasket, throttle body assembly gasket, and along vacuum hoses and ends of hoses. With engine running, maybe raised just off idle-keep it running while you wet down those areas. If using water spray (as a fine mist to soak the areas) look for a drop in rpm's. when water gets sucked in, it may try to kill the engine-will definitely run rougher. If using carb cleaner, engine pitch will also change as the cleaner is bolatile and may increase rpm's. But you will know if you have a leak, as engine speed will change.///Misfires are usually gas, spark, or compression related. If you have gas and spark in #3, and still misfiring, and other checks okay, then do a comporession test.
