Do you mean to say that it doesnt run at all unless you block tht hole? (air hole) or does it run unevenly or rather roughly the engine,

is this air hole where the air filter is fitted?

The carb jets are clogged and in need of cleaning, when the jet clog, the engine doesn't provide enough suction to pull the gas through the clog,When you cover the breather hole, you force all of the suction from the piston's decompression stroke to the carb which allows it to **** the gas.

So to make a long story short. The carbs internal parts need cleaning.

If it's cold, you need the choke to richen the fuel mixture until the engine warms up. Use your hand to partially cover the air intake. Once it starts, use your hand to feather the amount of air you allow to the engine until it smoothes out.

Tecumseh starts won't idle unless you hold in the choke bulb

If you mean your having to pump the primer bulb to keep it running. Then the main jet is plugged.
1. Take jet(bowl nut) off the bottom of the carb
2. spray carb cleaner through all holes. (up to 4)
3. find a hemming pin and break of the sharp tip, run that through all small holes there may be one hidden in the threads.
4. repeat step 2. and dry with a shot of air( air dusting cans are ok).
These steps are for emissionized carbs( no mixture screws )

Briggs 23 hp mud motor dies off and wont run over quarter throttle

Sounds like your carb is plugged up with gunk. Will require a good cleaning OFF the engine. This includes running small diameter wire into the ports and bore holes in the carb to dislodge any gunk in them. You can use low pressure air to blow out the channels and hoes, even your breath will be enough, just blow through a straw or tube, or use WD40 with the red tube that comes with it to flush the channels. Make sure you keep track of all parts you remove!! Work on a tray or other containment surface.

Make it nice and clean and then reassemble and reinstal on engine.

Also make sure your air filter is clean.

Got a linmax 50cc kids quad - wont start. sounds like it wants 2 but not kickin

You need to check spark and fuel first.
Ground the spark plug try to start it, do you get good blue spark that makes a pop noise.
Then put the plug back put your hand over the carburator intake. try to start, does your hand have a fuel smell.
Then get back to us and we will take you from there.

Gilera Runner very difficult to start cold, then cuts out when hot

to check the electric choke..take it/off out of carb & unplug it. then get 2 short lenghts of wires, strip both ends...shove one end into the choke plug teminals(one in each hole) .then put one of the striped ends of thewires on a charged battery(one on the positve & one on the negitvie terminals) .keep them on for about 5 mins & you should see the choke head extend (you could always mesure it befor you put to battery & check in 5mis to see if extened!!) this will tell you if its working!!...if its not working this will explane why you have trouble starting from cold!!..it also sounds like the main jet is blocked...this is found by taking of the float bowl (as you may know!)it will prob be the small hole up the middle of the jet that is made up with muck!!...try sticking a strand of a wire brush up/threw it...also it sounds like the exhaust is leaking round the maifold..will have to take exhaust of & check if it need a new gasket..or resealing!!(does the exhaust blow?. this is good way to tell if it is leaking(put a rag/palm of hand over end of exhaust & you should beable to hear it blowing. ...hope this helps....Howard

Quad bike keeps cutting out

ALWAYS have a fire extinguisher on hand when working on carburetors.
Remove the water trap bowl at the bottom of the petcock, (gas valve). Is there any water or trash in the bowl? Drain a cup of gas from the tank. Is there any water or trash in the cup? Dump it, clean it and re-mount it, ( not all bikes have a water trap bowl ).

Drain the carburetor. There may be a screw on the lower side of the carb float bowl. Remove the screw then replace it after the fuel drains. Turn the gas back on and wait a minute for the carb to fill with gas. If the bike doesn't start and run properly then shut off the gas and remove the carburetor from the engine.

Remove the float bowl and clean the entire carb with a spray carb cleaner from the auto parts store. Wear protective goggles to avoid getting spray in your eyes. Spray into all the little airways and fittings in the carb. Remove the idle screw and the air screw on the outside throat of the
carb and spray into the screw holes as well.
< < READ CLOSELY > >
Be sure to put these two screws back in the same hole they came out of. IMPORTANT > do not tighten these two adjusters down. Only screw these in until they LIGHTLY seat. Now turn each adjuster one and one half turns outward. Before putting the slide back in the throat of the carb, move the clip on the jet needle one notch lower. Put the rest of the
carb back together, clean the air filter and install the carb. Let the float bowl fill then start the engine. This process should get you back on the road.

Please rate this solution. Thanks!
