Question about 1989 Yamaha TZR 250

How do i set the two stroke pump on a early model 3ma,also i have got conflicting reports on deristricting in relation to the ingition ,moveing the pickup .my bike is frame no3ma-007139 it has the carb warmer gone,m max box on the loom,air box rubbers cut,washers gone from pipes,and smaller main jets 180 instead of 200.the inginition is standard i only have the bike a mounth the above mods are done a long time from the looks of things its in fairly good running order butthe power deliverly is very uneven standing still the bike bogs around 7 or 8 thou but once through will rev clean out too the red line ok.the bike will pull out too 180kms ok but the power diliverly is **** in geting there.carbs are clean and ballanced,good quality 2 stroke oil,pipes are coke free and power valves are working corectly,im using ngk br9 plus is this a ingition problem or a carb problem in your oppinion .and is this bike classed as a import model so i know whwt info i pick up is relevant thanks vinny.

Hi,

As far as your doubt for poor power delivery its certainly the ignition problem. If you can work on the following for example: all-new exhaust pipe, exhaust power valve, a new ignition curve, and a four gram lighter piston and pin combination the power delivery can be improved.

The particular model you have is very rare a import model.

Most electronic components have a 5-10% tolerance. That said, you are pushing 20% with the higher voltage. It may work, it may fail. More important than voltage however, is the current rating of the charger. 5.9V at 3ma is one thing, 5.9V at 500ma is another thing entirely.

If the timing is out can it affect the spark?


It can. The timing determnes when the spark happens in a cylinder, in relation to the fuel mixture coming in and the position of the piston stroke. So, the spark needs to happen when the fuel mixture is in there fully, and the piston is just at the top of its stroke and starting down.

If the timing is out, you get ignition too early or too late, which causes loss of power, and sometimes even piston damage.

Poor timing is also the most common cause of hard starting.

My tzr 3ma wont rev over 7000 rpm


Hi, Kevin and the usual suspects are:
1. Severely drained or faulty battery.
2. Faulty regulator/rectifier or high output coil.
3. Faulty power valve, solenoid or installation.
4. Clogged air filter or exhaust.
5. Cracked or incorrect float level.
6. Float needle is not seating.
7. Faulty reed valve.

A Gale Buccaneer 2 stroke of recent manufacture will run a mixture of one part 2 stroke oil to 50 parts gasoline.
The early models use 24 to 1.
Use only good quality 2 stroke oil.
Using a little more oil doesn't hurt.

When I try to record back to back programs on different channels the timers won't work. It tells me there is a conflict with the timers and tells me to change priority or whatever. I can set a manual...


Hi this is Luke.
DVR Priority settings are used to prioritize timers should there be a conflict between timers. The top of the list is the highest priority and takes precedence. The bottom of the list is the lowest priority. A lower priority timer will not fire if there is a higher priority timer at the same time. Timers that conflict with each other will display Attention 532. The message may display when switching from Single User Mode to Dual User Mode because the receiver recalculates timers for conflicts.
  1. Press DVR three times on the remote (twice for a 942 receiver). The skip timer icon (red x) designates a conflicting timer.
  2. Select Timers.
  3. Select Set Priority.
  4. Select the timer to change.
  5. Use the Up and Down arrow buttons on the remote or the Move Up and Move Down options on the screen to move the timer priority one at a time. Use the Move to Top and Move to Last options on the screen to make the timer top or last priority.
  6. Select Done.

Selecting Automatically resolve by priority will allow the receiver to set the priority level of the timer. The last timer created will have the lowest priority level and will not be recorded if both tuners are being used for other higher priority level timers.

Selecting Change the priority of this timer will allow the customer to set the priority level of the timer. With the new event highlighted in the Daily Schedule screen (the event will display with the skip icon), press Select. Select Restore and then Yes. The new timer will now have a higher priority level than the conflicting timers.

You may also want to resolve the conflict by:
  1. Press Menu on the remote.
  2. Select Daily Schedule.
  3. Select Timers.
  4. Arrow over and select the timer that needs to be edited.
  5. Select Edit.
  6. Make the desired changes then select done.

Which hose goes to which connection on a primer


Remove the primer pump line that goes back to tank and try to pump fuel from the carburetor (assuming that the primer pump is in good condition). If the hose connections to the carburetor are correct, you will be able to pump fuel from the carburetor. If it doesn't pump anything, reverse the two connections to the carburetor, and recheck the pumping process. Hope this helps!

the oil injection cable is out of sync with thottle

The pump is set to a very specific position in relation to the carburetor opening. The manual will reveal all.

As I recall - and I could be wrong - it's been 30 years! since I last played with one - it was full open on the throttle/twist grip and there was a mark on the pump body that was supposed to align with a mark on the arm that the pump cable attaches to. Adjust the oil pump cable till it aligns. DO check with a Suzuki dealer though!
