Starter mounting bolt has falling out of block on 04 impala
One of ( i believe its the lower or rear mounting bolt has worked its way out of the engine block whats the best way to fix this so it wont be a reocurring problem??
Re: starter mounting bolt has falling out of block on 04...
Hi. First you need to try and establish why it came loose if possible. Best solution is to remove the bolt and inspect the bolt threads to see if they look damaged or stripped. If they look ok wind it back in and try to feel if it winds in smoothly and tightens up properly. If it is very tight as you wind it in or slips when tightening then you may have stripped/ damaged threads in the bolt hole. If it goes in and tightens ok then you can pull it back out and put a small drop of thread lock on the tip of the threads(local motorist store will sell it). don't put more than a drop on or next time you need it out you will struggle and finally check the other bolts for the starter. Disconnect battery, block rear wheels, jack up vehicle . there are only 2 bolts holding starter up, make sure truck is not hot..sorry should have said that first...any how I always cut a 4in x 4 in block of wood because I never seem to have truck high enough,,,,and how remove 2 bolts...DO NOT LET IT FALL....gently lower starter,,,there are 2 wires that come off..one goes to center bolt and second smaller wire goes onto small bolt....make sure you know which bolt to put smaller wire onto....once your done DOUBLE check and make sure the wires are not touching any thing else. ( can short out starter)....clean off bolts and put starter back in...and replace bolts....double check wires....I always do a start before lowering....once your sure you got it right lower truck and remove blocks....just a note I would NEVER buy one from junk yard or remaned.....better to have a brand new one with warranty...and allot of places like advance will give military discounts and a discount if ordered online and pick up same day at store.....GOOD LUCK
All of the nuts and bolts are metric on it. It helps to use a 13mm swivel socket on the starter bolts but you can use a wrench if you need to. Also, a 7/8 open end wrench for the 02 sensor, or an 02 sensor socket.
Let me give you the steps for the starter and also the front engine mount bracket. You don't have to remove the entire mount, just the bracket
REMOVAL
Open Hood.
Disconnect the negative battery cable.
Raise vehicle and support.
Disconnect the electrical connector from the 02 sensor.
Remove the 02 sensor from the exhaust manifold .
Remove the front mount through bolt.
Remove the front mount bracket from engine block.
Remove the battery cable from starter.
Remove the lower starter bolt and remove starter.
INSTALLATION
Install starter to transmission.
Start the upper starter bolt.
Start the lower bolt and snug it so that the starter will not move.
Remove the upper bolt.
Connect the battery cable and torque nut to 8.5 Nm (75 in. lbs.).
Install the front mount bracket and check heat shield location.
Install bolt the upper bolt and torque bolt to 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.)
Install the lower and torque bolt to 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.)
Install the front mount through bolt and torque bolt to 61 Nm (45 ft.. lbs.)
Install the 02 sensor and torque to 27 Nm (20 ft. lbs.)
Lower vehicle.
Connect the negative battery cable.
FRONT MOUNT
REMOVAL
Raise vehicle.
Remove front mount to bracket horizontal through bolt (Fig. 87).
Loosen the rear mount through bolt.
Remove front mount vertical bolts (Fig. 87).
Remove front mount and separate the starter heat shield.
INSTALLATION
Position front mount on lower radiator crossmember.
Loose install front mount to bracket through bolt.
Install front mount vertical bolts. Tighten bolts to 61 Nm (45 ft. lbs.) . (Fig. 87).NOTE: Be sure the weight of the engine is static and in rest position. this for a 2.7 v6
REMOVAL
Disconnect the negative battery cable.
Remove (UPPER RADIATOR CROSS MEMBER) and relocate (UPPER RADIATOR CROSS
MEMBER REMOVED) the upper radiator crossmember, (Refer to 23 -
BODY/EXTERIOR/RADIATOR CROSSMEMBER - REMOVAL).
Remove the radiator fan module (FAN MODULE IN VEHICLE) (Refer to 7 - COOLING/ENGINE/RADIATOR FAN - REMOVAL).
Remove the wiring harness clip from front mount.
Remove the coolant line clamp bolt (COOLANT LINE BRACKET).
Remove the upper nut from the front mount (FRONT RUBBER MOUNT UPPER NUT).
Remove the upper starter mounting bolt (UPPER STARTER BOLT).
Remove the middle starter bolt (MIDDLE STARTER BOLT).
Raise vehicle and support.
Remove the lower front mount nut (FRONT RUBBER MOUNT IN POSITION).
Raise and support engine (SUPPORT ENGINE).
Remove the lower bracket bolt to transmission (BRACKET TRANS BOLT).
Remove the lower bracket bolt to engine block (BRACKET ENGINE BLOCK BOLT).
Relocate the front mount and bracket.
Disconnect the positive battery cable from starter
Disconnect the solenoid connector from starter.
Remove the lower starter bolt (STARTER LOWER BOLT).
Remove starter from vehicle.
the top bolts come in from the rear of the bell housing. They these bolts mount both the bell housing to the block and the starter motor to the block. Under neath just line up wich mount bolts are close to the starter and undo them, possibly 2 that hold them. once remove starter should fall straight into your hand
Fig.: The starter motor on later model 4.3L engines is retained
by two long bolts
Disconnect the negative battery cable.
Raise and support the front of the truck safely using jackstands.
If necessary for access, disconnect the front exhaust pipe.
If equipped, remove the starter heat shield.
On the 2.2L engine, remove the brace rod from the front of the
engine and the bell housing.
On 2.2L engines, remove the drivers side wheel to access the
starter motor wires and the starter motor attaching bracket-to-engine
bolt through the opening in the wheel well.
Disengage the wires from the starter solenoid.
On the 2.2L engine, remove the attaching bracket-to-engine mount
bolt.
Remove the starter-to-engine block bolts. When removing the last
bolt, be sure to support the starter to keep it from falling and
possibly injuring you.
Carefully lower the starter and shims (if equipped) from the
vehicle.
If necessary, remove the bracket (2.2L engine) or the shield (4.3L
engine) from the starter assembly.
To install:
If removed, install the bracket or shield to the starter, as
applicable. Tighten the bracket nuts to 97 inch lbs. (11 Nm) or the
shield nuts to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
Carefully raise the starter and shims (if equipped) into position
in the vehicle and thread one of the retaining bolts to hold it in
position.
On the 2.2L engine, loosely install the bracket-to-engine mount
bolt.
Install the remaining starter mounting bolt, then tighten all
mounting fasteners to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).
Engage the wiring to the solenoid as noted during removal.
On the 2.2L engine, install the brace rod and tighten the
retainers.
If disconnected for access, install the front exhaust pipe and
tighten the fasteners.
If equipped, install the starter heat shield.
On 2.2L engines, install the drivers side wheel.
Remove the jackstands and carefully lower the truck.
Connect the negative battery cable.
Hope this help (remember rated this help) Good luck.
See Figure 1 The
starter motor is located on either the lower right hand (passenger) or
left hand (driver) side of the engine, bolted to the transmission
housing with two mounting bolts.
Disconnect the negative battery cable.
Removal and installation of the starter motor will require access from both the top and bottom of the engine compartment. Fig.
1: Common starter location and installation-the starter is a fairly
heavy component, be careful when lifting it out of the vehicle
Apply the parking brake and block the rear wheels.
Raise the front of the vehicle with a floor jack, using the proper frame positions.
Support
the vehicle on the frame or transmission crossmember, with jackstands.
Before working under the vehicle, make sure the vehicle is stable on
the jackstands. If it is not, reposition the jackstands so that it is.
Label and disconnect all wiring connectors at the starter.
Slowly
loosen the two starter mounting bolts until they are loose enough to
take out by hand. Since the starter motor is uncommonly heavy for its
size, it is important to support it well with one hand, while removing
the two mounting bolts with the other hand. If the starter is not
adequately supported, it could fall causing injury. Remove the starter
from the vehicle.
