Can I check the push rods on my 1340 Evo without removing the rocker box? please.

Hi, Plonk you can check the pushrods no need to remove the rocker box, for this scenario you will need a service/owners manual if you can not find the first and best tool you ever bought for your Harley, despair not, for a mere $10 you can download another one. For more information about your issue and valuable "FREE" downloads that you will need please click on the links below and for specific information or questions please feel free to contact me at xlch@mail.com. On a evo Harley Davidson how do I get my pushrods lowered so I can install my rocker boxes

the push rods are at a required length to activate the rocker gear
by shortening the push rods the valves will not open and the engine will not go

if the original rocker covers will not fit after work has been done then I would go back to square one and find out what has been assembled incorrectly

How to replace umbrella valves 1998 fatboy

This is fairly easy on the Evo engines.

Remove top of rocker box cover.
Ease up old valve (not a good time for gorilla tactics here), being careful not to pull valve off of stem, leaving stem in the hole.
A little spritz of WD-40 down the stem might help.

Position new valve stem into hole, push down on center of valve until stem pops into hole.
If difficult, a dab of oil might help.
After insertion, GENTLY pull up on edges of valve to make sure stem stays in hole.

Replace rocker box top cover, repeat for other rocker box.

Go for a ride!

Harley Evo blowing oil through air filter. Isn't

Well, there is an "umbrella valve" in each of the center sections of the rocker box. These can and do get brittle from the repeated heating and cooling. They do a good job of keeping the bulk of oil out of the air filter but they can't get it all. As will all previous Harleys, they blow a bit of oil and those that relieve their crankcase pressure into the air filter do still make a mess that must be cleaned out occasionally. But, it shouldn't be excessive. Excessive blowby on the rings can exaggerate the problem.

To replace the "umbrella valves", simply take the bolts out of the rocker box cover and replace the gaskets and the valve. You will have to pull the fuel tanks to do this job.

Good Luck
Steve
