Question about BMW R 1200 GS Adventure Motorcycles

Hi In the yoke of the bike where dumper rods are mounted there are joint links called as well as pot-type joints or bushes. Is there any test to check their wear? How can I know that I need to change them?

    ??? Service manual shows how to change joints but not when. I have Haynes and RepRom 5th edition and there is no information about how to test joints for wear.

- out of balance tyre/rim combination
- out of round tyres
- loose front hub adjustment
- worn tie rod end joints
- worn suspension bushes
- worn front strut and mount rubbers

Have replaced all tie rods; inner&outer;struts&upper mounts;sway bar bushings & links;lower control arms with ball joints& passenger side upper motor mount.none of these have changed this noise even s


What noise? And year and make of car?
A clicking noise on turns is a worn CV joint on the axle shafts. A grinding noise at one of the wheels could be a wheel bearing. Worn brake pads may cause squealing, screeching other high pitched noise.

Hello, Are the tires and wheels balanced? If they are balanced then check the drive shaft. This drive shaft transfer the power from the engine/auto transmission to the rear differential/rear wheel.
Now, on each end of the drive shaft is a flexible yoke, this splined yoke has a U-joint with four bearing cups. Two of the bearing cup is attached to the splined yoke and two are attached to the drive shaft. Now, on the rear differential end is a yoke but it has 4 bolts and nuts, it also will have a U-joint attached to the 4 bolted yoke and to other bearing cups attach to drive shaft. U-Joint is called "Universal Joint" Each U-joint has about 10 degree circular travel without any type of binding to the U-joints or the drive shaft.



Two things here. First, take a pry bar and wedge into the U-Joint and move the bar forwards, backwards, up and down. If the drive shafts moves in any direction and clanks. The u-joints need to be replaced and I would replace both of the U-joints. Secondly, if the U-joints aren't loose, then there is a good possibility that the drive shaft is out of balance. In other words, it has lost it small welded plats on the drive shaft and when you are drive you Chrysler the drive shaft is vibrating.



To replace the U-Joints and/or balance the drive shaft. You'll need to remove those 4 bolts and nuts on the differential yoke. Once the bolts are removed then push the drive shaft forward, it will slide forward. Now, under the transmission yoke place a pan/bucket/container to catch the transmission fluid that will drain out once the drive shaft is pull free from the transmission.



If you don't have a press, vise, brass 5 lb hammer, bushing, punches, then I would tackle this job of replacing these U-Joints. Without the proper tools, one can damage the U-joint yokes and the drive shaft. I wouldn't do this without the tools and experience. I use a cutting torch but I have been do it for 50+ years.



If the drive shaft is out of balance, then you will need to take to Drive Line Specialty Shop to have it balanced. Also, have them replace the U-Joints. They have all equipment to do this job. I wish you luck in your endeavor. GB....stewbison

what sort of noise clunks&bangs could be anything from shock mounting bushes exhaust hanging mounts or suspsion bushes.it would be a good idear 2 have a mechanic put it up on a hoist 2 check it out

I have a 1998 Ford ranger XLT, and when I start from a stop there is a "thunk" sound. Also when the transmission changes gears. "U" Joints?


U-joints would be one thing I would inspect. Check drive-shaft slip yoke for play, ring and pinion for slop, Also trans mount, engine mounts and rear leaf spring and shackle bushings.

What causes clunck/poping noise when turning wheel? new ball joint, strut mount and sway-bar links all tight.


usually it is a ball joint or tie rod or cv shaft. Those are the three main culprits

Rattling noise from near side front wheel area. Have checked for play on bearing and checked brake disc. No problem detected. Noise only occurs at low speeds.


i have the exact same problem ive got 2001 honda civic and have an annoying rattle from the wheel area. i have replaced cv joint, ball joint, sway bar drop links, strut, and suspension bushing and arm....but still rattle noise is there. dnt have a clue what it could be, from looking on the internet i have found few possibilities.....lower control arm/bushin...motor mounts....gear box mounts....strut rod bushing....axle....inner/outer cv joint....calliper pins......shock/shock bushing...or wheel bearing. im hoping tio get all this checked out its got to be able to be fixed somehow!
