Most likely you have a CDI box failure. the easiest way to find out tho is take it to a dealer and have them run a diagnostic test, usually around 60$ find out whats wrong and depending on the problem have them fix it or tackle the issue yourself.

How do i test to see if the spark plugs are fireing

Hi Anonymous, remove spark plug wires off of plugs, leave spark plugs in heads. Use a 3rd known good spark plug to check for spark.
Insert 3rd spark plug into any spark plug wire, ground the threads on bare metal like the edge a cylinder fin. Turn ignition switch on and make sure run/stop switch is in run position and the bike is in nuetral. Hit the starter button and watch for spark. Good luck

Yfz 450 only runs when pull started. Wasn't and haven't had any such issues starting it any time before.

Hi, Sal and the usual suspects are:
1. Fouled spark plugs.
2. Severely discharged or a damaged battery, should have 12.5 volts or better and be able to pass a load test if necessary.
3. Check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
4. Loose connection at ignition coil or plug between ignition sensor and module.
5. Spark plug cables in bad condition, shorting / leaking, spark plug cable connections loose, check for spark leakage in the dark.
6. Faulty ignition coil, pick up coil, trigger coil or CDI box testing needs to be checked with an ohmmeter at 70 degrees Fahrenheit
7. Faulty safety switches clutch, kickstand, neutral, off/on etc.
8. Faulty ignition switch.

Wants the bike is warm up and turn off it won't start and back fires,let set for awhile and it will start again,does it everytime.

You didn't say what type of bike you were having a problem with but it sounds like a classic case of "fuel percolation". When the engine is hot and you shut it down, the lack of air flowing by the carb allows the fuel in the float bowl to boil. This floods the engine and it won't start.

Now, to determine exactly what's going on, The next time it does it, have a spare set of spark plugs with you. Pull the spark plug wires off the plugs in the heads and put the spare set in the wires. Ground them good on the engine and press the start button. Watch for the plugs to fire. If you see spark, then you know your problem is fuel related. If not, it's ignition related. Then we can go from there.

Tell me what type of bike we're messing with here?

Hi i just got a 1988 gsx600f i put new plugs in it tuck it out for a ride and it was running good then i gave her a little gas to kinda see what it would do and it bogged so i idled it home and statred...

it seems odd that your coils would play up, usally the they just stop working. You talk of it bogging down? , i would suggest that to be a carby problem, especialy if the bike has sat around for a while. first try to just drain the carbys, as you can do this without removing them, should be a drain screw or plug on the bottom of the carby. Make sure your air filter is clean too!

My bike turns but dosent get the spark to fire up

Quite often I've found on older bikes the coil can become corroded.  I would begin by taking apart all the electrical connections between the battery, ground, the plugs themselves, the coil, and the generator, and giving them a good clean.  Most of the time I've found, that should eliminate your problem.  A good way to troubleshoot this is to jumpstart the bike.  If the bike will start (i.e. has spark) while jumped, but will not run when you disconnect the jumper cables, it is most likely a corrosion problem somewhere in your system.
Good luck with your bike!

Bike only fires once

Okay, let's have a look at it. Say Ahaaa.
The probable cause of the problem is not the spark. Get a fresh set of Stock NGK spark plugs, ground the plus to the engine, and check each cylinder for spark as the starter button is pressed for 3 seconds or so. I will wager that the spark is present.

The likely problem is the fresh gas was put into a very rusty gas tank. Bits of rust now inhabit your carb and are having fun plugging up the carb. Look at the gas valve. With a little luck there is a small bowl behind the valve. Remove it and tell me what you see in the bowl.

Bike wont start

Initially, pls check/verify:
  • left ignition coil goes to #1 & #4 plugs while right ign coil supplies 2 & 3;
  • presence of spark on each and all of the plugs;
  • temporarily remove the air cleaner/filter box/assembly and cover each crb opening with the palm of your hand while cranking. presence of gas would be noted with fuel on your palm;
  • engine flooded. remove, clean, dry/replace plugs.
Incidentally, if no spark on plugs, check connectors to CDI, or starting with the clutch lever pulled.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information. Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.
