Sounds like the clutch plates may need replacing..
To test for a worn clutch: Release the clutch from a stop in 2nd gear as if starting out in first. With a good clutch the engine will die. If the clutch is worn, the bike will move forward and then lug as the clutch engages. This can be done at home. Follow directions in the shop manual. An air impact wrench is helpful for removing the clutch basket nut,

Good luck

The chain feels and sounds like it's jumping gears or slipping on the rear sprockets. It does it in all gears. It is a diamondback wildwood large 20"

The rear derailleur needs adjusting, once to establish limits (so it can't go past high gear or low gear). Everything else is up to you fine-adjusting the shifter to make the bike run quietly. If you're careless about your gear changes, you'll get MOSTLY into one gear but not quite perfectly, so the bike is always trying to start shifting into another gear - that's the sound you hear, the sensation you feel. Fine-tune your shifter positions each time you shift - you'll find a "sweet spot" where the bike runs almost perfectly silently.

No, they can't readily do that at the factory, not with chain drives. There are just too many things that can affect gear changes, and things are in a slightly different position every time you remove & replace the rear wheel, or even loosen & retighten it. Unless you're ready to spend vast dollars on a foolproof shifter system, shifting cleanly is going to be your job and your job alone. It's one measure of your bike riding skill... and the better you get at that skill, the better you feel about it.

...and your bike will like you for it.

2010 crf450r jumping outta gear from 5th to 4th all other gears work fine

Terrence >>>> 1. Do not go through the gears while idling on a stand!!!
The rear tire is not moving at the speed that is normal for 4th or 5th gear..AND if you do get the tire moving that fast.. it is BEYOND DANGEROUS!!
This sounds like the 4th and 5th gears may need replacing.. or the shift drum detent for 5th gear has somehow become ineffective.. If you continue to ride this bike , you may cause more trouble and damage to the transmission.

Take this to a qualified professional!!

V star 650 pops out of 5th gear into 4th gear around 55 mph

Hi, Anonymous and the usual suspects are:
1. Shifter pawl improperly adjusted.
2. Shifter drum improperly adjusted or damaged.
3. Shifter engaging parts/dogs badly worn or rounded.
4. Shifter forks bent.
5. Damaged gears.

Do you still feel the same feedback from gear lever when you change gear or it appear loose? It looks like a gearbox problem, maybe due to low gearbox oil something has broken inside the gearbox.

Need help tweeking gears please

What's going wrong with the gears? Is it a new bike? I'll take a couple shots in the dark: Both the front and back derailers have adjustment screws (usually two). These are only limiter screws and they set how far out and in the derailer can travel. If your chain is slipping off either the biggest or the smallest gear then you may need to adjust these. More often, especially on a new bike, the cable worked initially but has since stretched slightly. This will feel more like many, if not all, of the gears want to slip to the next gear when you put power to the pedal. To fix this, look at either end of the cable housing (plastic part) for a knurled adjustment. Screw this "out" so that it extends the housing. Often this adjustment is up near the shifter lever/knob/etc and can be adjusted as you ride (of course watch for traffic). Fine tune this knob till the gears shift easily and stay when peddling hard. Try screwing one way, then the other till things improve. Good luck!

Gear shifting is too tight

Hi, Nirmal_nettu and the usual suspects are:
1. Clutch dragging slightly.
2. Primary chaincase overfilled with lubricant.
3. Corners wore off shifter clutch dogs.
4. Shifter return spring bent or broken.
5. Bent shifter rod.
6. Shifter forks sprung.
7. Transmission oil too heavy.

My Harley 883 Sportster suddenly became stuck in 5th gear.

More than likely the shifter pawl has broken. Breaking in 5th gear is kind of unusual however, they usually break between first and second.

You'll have to remove the outer primary cover to look at the shifter pawl. It's partially covered by the clutch assembly.

Transmission will not upshift between 3rd and 4th gear

It sounds like the shifter pawl might not be centered. This is located behind the clutch basket and is a pretty big job to get to, easy adjustment just a pain to get to. You will need a manuel to do it yourself.
