SOURCE: i have a 82 Yamaha

The side gasket is starting to leak & will need to be replaced eventually. You can try leaning the bike over opposite of the leak...clean all the oil off...remove the 1 bolt that is leaking,
clean and dry it, put some oil resistant rtv sealant on the threads and tighten it back up. check the other case bolts in a criss-cross pattern to make sure none are loose...let it cure for a few hours, and give it a whirl...hope this helps

Hi I am doinng an oil change on my xj 650 and it has the oder of fuel in it and there seems to be to much oil drained out of the engin any idear as to the problem.

If the bike has stood for a long time, with the petrol tap in the on possition and if it has a leaky float valve, there is a possibility that fuel has leaked onto the top of an engine piston and in turn leaked through the rings into the oil.
Another reason could be miss firing over a prolonged time, causing a similar result.
Hope that helps.

What would cause my 2001 dr-650 to leak oil at the top of the cylinder near the exhaust only when running? is it difficult to repair?

Sounds like a bad head gasket. Try the following. Remove the head cover and tighten down the head bolts. Don't tighten the cam bolts. Remount the cover and hope that sealed up the leaking gasket. If not, the head will need a new gasket. Remove the head cover and sparkplug, put the piston at TDC compression then note the cam gear reference mark)s) position. The gear will need to go back in in the exact same position. Remove the cam gear and dismount the chain from the cam. Hook a wire to the cam chain so it can't fall into the tranny. Now pull the head off and remove the carbon from the head an piston then replace the gasket. It would be a good idea to reseat the valves since you have the head off. I don't really recommend this repair for the beginner. Please rate my answer. tombones49_91.gif

Hi, my Yamaha 82 XJ 650 is not starting

Hi, Pooya44e and the usual suspects are:
1. Damaged or restricted fuel tank venting system.
2. Loose float bowl screws.
3. Damaged float bowl o-ring.
4. improper fuel level in the float bowl.
5. Worn or dirty inlet valve or seat.
6. Damaged or leaking float assembly.
7. Particle contamination in inlet fitting cavity.

REPLACE CLUTCH PLATES ON A 1981 YAMAHA XJ550

Buy a clutch cover gasket. Take clutch cover off, remove 5 bolts and pressure plate, pull each plate out one at a time keeping them in order, replace with new plates, new plates go in same order. Soak the new plates in oil overnight before installing. Clean gasket surfaces completley.

Two questions: Oil leak from top of engine; bike shut down ridin

the battery terminal being loose would cause that, since the rectifier would freak out. the leak you speak of is probably not eh head gasket ro you would have compression problem with amount of oil that can run down the bike. It sounds like a corner on the valve cover gasket or something I think there is a cover for the valve adjust ment there so check it out the gasket may be worn. no biggie get a new one.

When warm will not stay running+leaks oil to the air cleaner

This is an XS 650, no? Sounds like you might have some piston ring blow-by (especially if its burning some oil), or possibly bad valve seal's'. The valves could be tight, so make sure the valve clearance is correct first, then compression test, and finally a 'leak-down' test.

If it is blowing by, it probably is fouling plugs and you will need more energy in the spark to fire, but this is a secondary issue, which will be eliminated with the fixing of the other issues. Good luck!

Cost will probably be around $300.00. Call a dealer and they can tell you exactly. Most of them have standard price lists for standard repairs.
