Question about 2009 Yamaha XJ6

1 Answer

2009 Yamaha XJ6 won't start

I started my bike and left it ticking over to charge the battery. When I returned to the bike it had cut out and when I tried to re-start it it just made a clicking noise. The lights come on but it just clicks and won't fire up. It started perfectly the first time

Hi, Anonymous and the usual suspects are:
1. Ignition Switch not in the "ON" position.
2. Engine Run Switch in the "OFF" position.
3. Discharged battery, needs to be 12.5 volts or better and be able to pass a load test if necessary.
4. Check the battery terminals for damage or corrosion check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
5. Tip over sensor needs a reset.
6. Faulty ignition switch.
7. Faulty starter button.
8. Faulty kickstand or clutch pull in switch/sensor.
9. Starter control circuit, relay, or solenoid faulty.
10. Main fuse or circuit breaker may be blown or faulty.
11. Check for engine trouble codes.

SOURCE: 1999 Yamaha Vstar 650 Custom ...makes clicking noise when trned

i use a jump box on mine most weekends when i wanna take it out, i hook the red to battery and black onto my exhaust and it fires right up no problem. is the clicking noise coming from the fuel pump behind the ignition? it should click for a few seconds then stop. if it stays on then you are not getting enough fuel outta the tank, change the fuel filter and if bike had been stored for winter get a good fuel system cleaner, additive type. if in USA get Berrymans B12, double dose get bike to run hopefully let it stand overnight and all should be fine. fingers crossed. if is is clicking from somewhere else like starter or a relay by the battery, check all the ground terminals you can find

SOURCE: yamaha tw. noise from engine

Check and reset (if needed) the valve clearances. With the engine cold, set the intake to .002 and the exhaust to .003. Is the cam chain tensioner set properly? Burn premium gas and install a new NGK spark plug one heat range colder than stock to lessen any possible pre-ignition. Are there any signs of wetness, oil or blackish discoloration on the base of the cylinder head? > A blown head gasket can make a ticking sound also.

Please rate this solution. Thanks Kenneth!

Try jumping the positive directly to the starter,if it starts, the solenoid is bad.

These are known for starter problems... The clicking you hear is the relay but the bendix is locked up put it in about 3rd gear and rock it hard forward and back. Bendix may release. Make sure battery is good. As I said before these bike are well known for their starter problem and even after having it fixed by a dealer problem seems to show back up after a very short time. Good Luck!

SOURCE: My BT1100 will not start.

Normally I would say it was dirty terminals, but a jump start should by pass that. Because of the clicking sound, start with the terminals, then try to find your stater motor and try to identify where the sound is actually coming from (ie take the seat off). The solenoid is the next thing that makes that noise, and finally if all else fails, then your starter motor is cactus. I cannot find a manual for you, but have a look yourself, you might find a comparable one that will help you.

I have a 2009 Yamaha v-Star 250, the battery died.got a new one and I drove it when I went to restart it nothing I roll started it. but my lights were dim . Won't start now. What is the issue?

Defective alternator. That is what keeps the battery fully charged. Once the bike is started, the alternator is what keeps the lights on and bright, not the battery. The battery is used just to start the bike only. Dim lights, means that only the battery is powering the lights.

Starting Issue

All indications are that the Battery is gone. Make sure that you are getting a reliable test...take battery to an auto store that gives free battery checks.
Once you verify that the battery is actually good ( which I very much doubt) you can check these other things:
1. that the GROUND wire at the battery has a good contact with the frame.
2. that the alternator is functioning...test at auto store is free.
3. that all electrical connection to the starter are good.
If you follow these instructions in order, you WILL find the issue. I've been there many times... Good Luck

Hard to start cutting out 2007 r1 starts up but wont tick over, cuts out occaisionallly when stopping at a junction

hi, if the 2007/2008 r1 spins fast but chgs and has to be coakst with the throttle to keep running and cuts out when the throttle is closed then it maybee due to the battery, i have fixed lots of them now afterm much fault finding by fitting a new genuine or yuasa battery. The problem is that all the power is being used to spin the engine and even once started there is not enough voltage to fire the spark and injectors properly and the charging system has not yet been able to pull the battery up. REPLACE THE BATTERY IT WILL SORT IT, PAUL (YAMAHA DEALER)

Starts ticks over but won't rev

I had similar problem. I wound up taking the carb to a bike shop and letting them clean it. They had an ultrasound bath that they put it in. It's submerged in a solvent, then they shoot sound waves at it to loosen up stuff that a regular cleaning can't get to. After I did that, it ran like a top....For 3 1/2 years...Then I had to do it again.
