witch timing marks the one on the cams or the flywheel if you lined all the cam marks up with the pinion gear your good to go the mark on the flywheel is for ign timing only

You should have two lines on the cam gear, they normally run with the valve cover plane. This is with the crank at top, as you should see a mark for that. (Usually marked "T" or "F")

You didn't say WHY the cam / valve timing needs to be reset. For some reason I get the feeling someone told you that resetting was needed and so you are asking how. Obviously, you may have installed new pistons and that is why the resetting is needed. In either event, when the cam timing is set the valve timing is also set. Other than adjusting valve lash, setting the cam sets the valve timing. Below is a web site where you can do a free download of a factory service manual. The process is not hard but having a manual will be more help and faster help than I can give online.

Testimonial: "Thanks for your reply. I've been to the web site before and downloaded the manual already. It does not really cover the situation I have. There also seems to be a lack of compression with the bike. A friend has lent me a workshop manual so I will try that in the mean time. Thanks again "

Are you just checking the marks or did you change the belts??? Your 749 falls into a different category than most desmoquatros, It is in the 998, 999 family. And, It is a minor nightmare to pull the belts off without setting up the marks before the belts come off. Your cams will be at 12 o-clock, the marks straight up, the belts are clearly marked, or should be, the number of teeth in between the cams can be counted, if all 3 marks line up, you know it is aligned right. That is the crankcase and the 2 cams. I have pages of info on this if you want to read it. You will have to let me know. Hope this helps. 2002 S4,,, 99 750 monster
