Remove plugs , put plugs in caps and hold them to a good earth on engine then crank engine and see if any have spark , if you got one then alternate that plug between all cylinders and see if they spark ! you can also remove caps from ht wires and cut back slightly , also use a multi metre and check the resistance of each cap dont have too much because they do need replacing now and then !

My 96 Cadillac Eldorado has no spark coming from quoil

quoil ? Coil ! This is a very complex ignition system ,rather replacing parts an costing yourself a lot of money do yourself a favor an take it to a ASE certified repair shop ! Could be any number of things ,from one of the two crankshaft sensors , cam sensor , ignition control module , engine computer etc.. Are there any codes stored in the PCM ? That's the first thing that should be done , have a scan tool hooked up !
The ignition system uses a waste spark method of spark distribution. During cranking, the Ignition Control (IC) module monitors the crankshaft position sensor signals. The signals are used to determine the correct pair to spark first. After the crankshaft position signals have been processed by the IC module, it sends a fuel control reference pulse to the PCM. When the PCM receives this pulse it will command all eight injectors to open for a priming shot of fuel in all cylinders. After priming, the injectors are left OFF for the next eight fuel control reference pulses from the IC module (two crankshaft revolutions). This allows each cylinder a chance to use the fuel from the priming shot. During this waiting period, a cam pulse will have been received by the PCM. Now the PCM begins to operate the injectors sequentially based on true crankshaft position. However, if the cam signal is not present at start-up, DTC P0340 will set and the PCM will start fuel delivery in a random pattern with a 1 in 8 chance that fuel delivery is correct.
The crankshaft position sensor signals are used only by the IC module. It is used for spark synchronization and to initiate reference pulses only (not passed to the PCM).

When any condition is suspected to be caused by or related to the ignition control system, the first step in diagnosis should be to check for stored PCM DTCs. Diagnose all DTCs before further action is taken. If no DTCs are stored and the condition is still present, refer to the following:

Dear Sir,
As you said coil is getting currant but not sparking further to spark plug , then check few things.

1 Check the connector is proper fitted on ignition coil.

2. No lose connection with pin of connector or pin should not be lose.

3. All pins are clean of connector and no rust is there.

4. Check High Tension cable (cablle black couler which run from ignition coil to spark plug) if found ok then try with new cable if it wont start.

5. It is problem with ignition coil replace it problem will solve.

Problem can solve at any step from 1 to 5 i did arrange all steps by easy to check and less expanses, final step will more expansive than earlier step.if any issue let me know. thanks

What does the ignition coil do?

the ignition coil changes low voltage from the battery (12 volts) to high voltage (about 50,000 volts) to fire the spark plugs and ignite the fuel in the engine cylinders and drive the piston down

WHERE ARE THE SPARK PLUGS LOCATED ON MY 1999 PONTIAC GRAND AM

Hi. here's the procedure on how to replace your spark plugs. Spark plug location is in this procedure.

  • Park the car in cool, shady area and allow the engine to cool.
  • Step 2 Remove the parts of the Grand Am engine that hinder access to the spark plugs. For a 2.2 L engine, remove the ignition coil housing. For a 2.4 L engine, remove the bolts that hold the retaining ignition coil and disconnect the electrical connector. Pull the assembly straight up and away from the engine to remove it. For a 3.1 L engine, remove the air cleaner. For a 3.4 L engine, remove the windshield wiper module cover and rotate the engine for service access to the rear spark plugs.
  • Step 3 Locate the spark plug wire and grab it by the spark plug boot. Twist the boot in both directions and pull back to remove the wire.
  • Step 4 Insert the spark plug socket over the old spark pull and unscrew it from the cylinder well. Remove the old spark plug.
  • Step 5 Lubricate the threads of the new spark plug and screw it into the cylinder well.
  • Step 6 Test the tension and adjust it to the required setting. It needs to be 15 ft-lbs. for a 2.2 L engine, 16 ft-lbs. for a 2.4 L engine, 13 ft-lbs. for a 3.1 L engine, and 11 ft-lbs. for a 3.L engine.
  • Step 7 Reconnect the spark plug wire and twist it to lock the plug in place.
  • Step 8 Repeat Steps 3 through 7 for the remaining spark plugs.
  • Step 9 Replace all of the parts that were removed from the Grand Am in Step 2 to reach to the spark plugs.

Engine turns over butdoes not fire

check step by step to find the problem. You mean the spark plug has no spark, ok, remove the spark plug no.1 into a cable and try to spark between spark plug and the cable, and if no spark, remove the spark plug cable from the ignition coil, and spark between the cable and the ignition coil, if there's no spark, replace your ignition coil, because probably is dead. ok

    INSPECTION

    1. Disconnect high-tension code from spark plug.
    2. Remove the spark plug.
    3. Connect the spark plug to a high tension code.
    4. Hold the spark plug with insulated pliers 5~10mm from a ground.
    5. Crank the engine and verify that there is a strong blue spark.
If there is no spark, inspect the following points.
