How to do timing on B&S 16.5HP Model 313777 Type 0134-E1

You will have to get inside the crankcase and get to the gears on the crank. Once you are able to see the gears you should see little timing marks that must align together when the gears mesh at that point. This goes for two gears and three or more if applicable. any gears that mesh may have a timing mark for another gear so be sure that each gear aligns with the timing mark when they mesh together.

  1. Drain the cooling system and remove the front cover.

CAUTION When draining the coolant, keep in mind that cats and dogs are attracted by the ethylene glycol antifreeze, and are quite likely to drink any that is left in an uncovered container or in puddles on the ground. This will prove fatal in sufficient quantity. Always drain the coolant into a sealable container. Coolant should be reused unless it is contaminated or several years old.

  1. Crank the engine until the timing marks on the camshaft and crankshaft gears are aligned.
  2. Use a gear puller to removal both of the timing gears.
  3. Before installing the timing gears, be sure that the key and spacer are properly installed. Align the gear key way with the key and install the gear on the camshaft. Be sure that the timing marks line up on the camshaft and the crankshaft gears and install the crankshaft gear.
  4. Install the front cover, and assemble the rest of the engine in the reverse order of disassembly. Fill the cooling system.

Crankshaft alignment on 94 ford ranger? I can't find a reference point on the crankshaft gear for the timing belt, my truck will start, but the timing is severely off. HELP!

Put the harmonic damper back on with the timing pointer mounted. Rotate engine until #1 is at TDC with both intake and exhaust valves closed. Timing pointer should be very close to 0 degrees. You should find a mark on the crank gear pointing straight up toward the cam gear. Rub the gear with a rag and acetone or alcohol to remove any varnish/oil buildup. When you find the marks on the crank gear, cam gear and auxiliary shaft gear, clean them and paint them with day glo orange so you can really see them next time. I'm assuming you have the 2.3L 4 cyl. engine since you said "timing belt".
