There are several things you need to check. Start by checking the alignment between the pinion gear of the starter and the flywheel. If that is loose or binding the starter will do this. Next, check teh starter relay to make sure it isn't faulting out. finally, if you have an Alarm installed, cut the power wire to the alarm or pull the fuse to make sure it isn't the Anti-Theft circuit malfunctioning and stopping it from starting.

Starts fine if you catch it on the first try. If you dont then it takes a couple of hours before it will start again.

A very common cause for the issue your having is;

Often, just by removing the battery cables and cleaning them, ( eventough they look okay with
what you can see. ), it helps give the battery much needed solid contact.
Highly recommended.

If that doesn't get the vehicle to start my next step is to try to jump start the vehicle.
The reason I do this is, if it will jump start, it removes many guesses from the trouble shooting
process. Often it removes concerns about fuel pumps and fuel filters. It also removes a lot of
the potential electrical issues, such as, coil packs, distributor, etc.

If this doesn't resolve your issue, my next best guess would be that you have a starter that is hanging up. If the battery doesn't give the starter a very big kick, the starter can bind up in the flywheel, and that may be why you have to wait several hours to try again.

Also, if the starter is hanging up, and you have easy access to it, sometimes you can just tap on the outer casing of the starter to get it to un-bind.

I hope this helps you.

Have you check your main fuse to the starter, starter relay and all realted wirings?
You have fried the starter motor my friend when you keep trying to turn it over until the motor stops.

Trouble turning over, but has new battery. Starter or alternater??

If you turn on your head light switch, and the lights are bright, you know your new battery has a good charge. If you can, remove your serpentine belt, and try to spin your alternator pulley by hand. If it is binding, or jammed, it could be keeping your engine from turning over. If it seems frozen or binding, replace the alternator. check all other accesories too, for binding. too. Once you check all pulleys, you can try to briefly start the car , with the belt off, and see if you have success

1990 Virago starting problem

These starters work Likrk by binding a roller which grips the crank shft end to rotate it.. If either the roller or the crank end surface wear too much, the starter will turn without grabbing or slip entirely not cranking over the engine.. Repair soon or serious damage can result.
