My 1987 Fifth Ave 318 dies while driving at highway speeds. I pull over and wait 5 minutes and it starts right back up and I can go again for 20 minutes until it does it again. Help

I am driving at highway speed. 100->120klm. I drive for about 20 minutes and while I am driving the engine shuts down. I pull over and try to start it up and it will not start. It turns over but nothing happens. I wait 5 minutes or so and it will start right back up. I changes the electronic fuel control box but that did not work. It is still doing the same thing. What could be the problem?

SOURCE: 1996 Camry 100 km stalling

You have one of two very common problems.
Number one may be a stuck open EGR valve
Number two would be a failing Idle Air Control valve (IAC).
Try this: Open the hood & locate the EGR valve, close to the firewall, behind the intake. Find & take with you a small hammer. The next time that it happens, open the hood & tap on the EGR valve. If it is sticking "open" the tapping may dislodge the carbon particles that are keeping it open. When the EGR valve is open, exhaust is getting into the intake at idle, and this will def stall out the car.
There is no repair to the IAC valve, it would need to be replaced if it is bad.
One of these two scenarios will cure your problem, I see it every day.

i would check your ignition system. you would need a meter for this but look for broke or loose connections. if it was a fuel problem i dont think it would just start up after 20 minutes. or you might try your ignition switch. if its shorting or something then ya well it would cut your engine off real quick

SOURCE: I have a 1997 chevy

Check for fuel pressure and check for spark during the no start condition. Also check the crank sensor, it is located behind the crank pulley mounted in the engine block on the 4.3 L engine
I hope this helps.

97 lumina, 3.1. Starts runs smooth, drive for 30

I just recently have been fighting the same problem with the same make/model/year vehicle. For myself, I would drive off and on through the day and it would run fine. Then suddenly after a start it would run rough and die. I would have to wait 20 to 60 mins before it would start again. I had it checked and fuel pump was only putting out around 19 psi. It should be around 41 psi. Had fuel pump replaced and no more problems. Furthermore, now it runs so much better. It's funny how over time I didn't notice how the performance was slowly degrading. Unfortunaley fuel pumps for this car run around $300.

The batery is geting 18volts of charge

First of all make sure your battery is in good condition, and then get a voltmeter attached to battery, before start & after to confirm what your inside gauge is telling you is correct. Check and clean all connections to & from battery. Otherwise it's pointing back at regulator again.
