What cause the Suzuki rectifier to burnout and the battery?

Hi Ken, in order to check out any main system electrical circuit, you have to start with a fully charged battery 12.5 volts or better, and be able to pass a load test if necessary.
1. Check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
2. Check the voltage drop at the battery when you hit the starter button, anything below 9 volts you might have a faulty battery.
3. Check voltage at the battery with the bike running at 3,600 RPM should be 14.3 to 14.7 volts. If you are not getting these numbers, you might have a faulty voltage regulator.
4. Make sure voltage regulator is grounded and functioning properly, watch the video below on how to test a voltage regulator.
5. Unplug the connector to the alternator and hook your multimeter leads to the alternator (pin/socket selection does not matter) set the multimeter to AC volts, at an idle the meter should read 16 to 20 volts AC. at 2,000 RPM 32 to 40 AC volts, 3,000 RPM 48 to 60 AC volts. If you are not getting these numbers, you may have a faulty rotor, follow step 6
6. Set the multimeter to OHM'S, connect one lead to the alternator (any pin/socket) and the other to a ground, the meter should read infinity. Connect both leads to the alternator meter should read 0.1 to 0.2 OHM'S. If you are not getting these numbers, you have a bad stator.
7. Check all wiring in the charging circuit for worn or chaffed spots and all wiring connectors in the circuit for corroded, broken, or loose pins/sockets, which is the # 1 offender.

If you bought the bike used this may have been a fix that someone else did previously. Some of the 90 model hondas didn't run a large enough gauge wire from the stator (alternator) to the regulator. It caused the connection to melt and the wires to burn. The easy fix (and I've done this myself) was to take the connector off and just fuse those wires together. I wouldn't worry about it unless you're having a problem with the bike.

Hi have you checked the output from the alternator? This is 3 faze it has 3 yellow wires which connect to the rectifier, here the voltage is converted to dc used for charging the batery, check for broken wires from the alternator under the front sprocket cover, or corroded wires at the rectifier block connector, it is also important to have 12 volts in the battery to activate the charging process, using the machine with a pore condition battery can severley dammage the charging system componants

Can anyone tell me how to remove fairing on right side of 1986 suzuki cavalcade. I need to replace rectifier.

You can get at the Reg/Rect by taking the fairing and dash cover off. You don't have to remove the right side fairing. I have done it this way. Remove the seat, false tank, handlebar/clock adjust buttons cover, vent cover around the steering, right inner fairing cover, windshield, dash cover. Then you have access to the Reg/Rect. The wiring loom for it runs back towards the right speaker, the connectors there split to the Stator and noise filters on the yellow wires. The Yellow wires can also be connected to any of the yellow connectors. You can also join a Cavalcade email group accessed through hope this helps.

Battery not charging and causing scooter to shut down , driving along road , next minute , engine starts to cough and back fire as lights go out

This is probably due to a faulty wiring, regulator/rectifier or, less likely faulty alternator
1st check the wiring & connections from the alternator to the reg/rect (3 yellows) then check wiring to the battery (thick red)
You should get 13.5 volts (with a fully charged battery) across the battery terminals rising with the engine revs to no more than 15.5 volts, if its over then the regulator is at fault
check the alternator for continuity between the 3 yellow wires (3 pairs) at the reg/rect plug after disconnecting it. the 3 pairs should have a similar reading & none should go to earth
To check the rectifier part you need a diode drop setting on your multimeter. there should be a reading 1 way only between the red & any yellow and between the black & any yellow if not it will need renewing

your voltage/reg. can be tested in a couple different ways check ground res. check res. then revs. bias on diodes you have ac in dc out it sounds like you may have a diode gone bad allowing ac curent to flow causing the wires to get hot

The simplest most reliable ever made by any auto maker was the GM 10SI alternator. It has a large stud terminal in the back and a two wire connector in the side. Run a large wire from the battery to the stud on the back. Take the red wire in the connector put a ring terminal on it and attach it to the stud in the back. The white wire in the connector needs to be connected to one side of a small incandescent pilot light the other side of the light should be connected to a 12 volt source that is turned on and off by the ignition switch. If the bulb is off while the car is running and on when it isn't running then the alternator is working. This is simplest charging system anyone ever put in a car. The Ford IVR is similiar but has more wires.

Sounds like your regulator/rectifier is faulty....but it could also indicate an alternator problem. Don't run the bike or it will eventually hurt your battery and/or your alternator (if it hasn't already.)

The wire currents, voltages, etc needs to be checked (from the alternator AND from the rectifier) so I recommend you take the bike to a mechanic unless you have a multimeter and shop manual handy.

I've found Yamaha wiring connections to be slightly weak....and sometimes lead to the premature death of the reg.rectifier. Solution was to 'solder' the connections instead.
