Question about 1997 BMW R 1100 RT

1 Answer

I have a 97 RT with 35k. When cold, it sounds like the starter sticks. I back off the starter and try again and it's ok. Only happens when cold. Any ideas?

Try make a carburation air/fuel regulation...maybe the moisture is too poor. And can need valves regulation, too.

Yes the starter solenoids and other mechanisms can stick. You can try spraying(about 2-4 seconds) the starter around the front of the shaft with wd40 and it may free it up but if not remove the starter and clean it out, lightly lube the shafts and put it back together. Be careful not to lose parts like shims etc when taking it apart. If you are not mechanically inclined then spraying it with wd40 would be the best option.

Power, but can not start

Try to quickly engage and disengage the starter motor by rotating the key all the way forward and back to ignition on only, and back again several times a second until the starter motor engages.

Sounds like the starter motor solenoid is sticking, maybe.

This happens on my 1997 Cadillac Deville sometimes on hot summer days or even in the winter.

I thought it was the security system, at first, but it is more likely a starter motor going bad.

Jeep liberty starter sticking in cold weather

Generally I have seen this happen when water gets into the starter and freezes overnight. When you first try to start it, the starter won't work correctly but heat generated while it's stuck will quickly melt the ice and then it works. Only way I know of to eliminate it is to remove the starter and use grease on all the moving parts that connect the solenoid to the starter Bendix drive. Not sure why, but it seems to happen on some starters but not all, even on identical vehicles. I have corrected the problem on many customers cars by greasing but have left mine alone and actually never had a problem other than the initial "being stuck" in the AM. If your starter is very old, you could replace it but that is up to you.

I have a 2003 jeep liberty..Jeep runs great .Having a start issue. It started when it was cold. The bendix would stick and stay inengaed for a second.as it got colder it was louder sounded like i was holding...

try shimming the starter , it sounds like it is a tiny bit to close to the flywheel and is binding, causing a tinny or metal to metal sound.
dosent sound like it needs a very thick shim .probably no more
than a thousands or two. hope this helps

97 audi a4 no power/battery fuse?

Sounds like either the battery leads are on the wrong way round, or the starter main cable is touching something and shorting to earth. Retrace your steps and check your connection locations.
Either that or its a dead short through the starter. Remove main cable from back of starter and tape up incase of short. then reconnect battery. If ok now then your looking at starter motor.
