Normally pistons are not bad but it is piston rings which go bad in time.
it emits too much white smoke if that be case
better replace

No compression number 1 cylinder did the leak test on valve no leaks piston looks ok please help


There are 4 main possibilities:
- Bad Valve seats
- Bad compression rings
- Bad head gasket
- Bad piston.
If there is no compression as in ZERO on a compression test, I'd look for a stuck open valve or a hole in the piston.
A blown head gasket will give different symptoms depending on where it's gone. Look for water in the oil, low coolant level, pull the oil filler cap and look for water vapour.

I.have a sears weedwhacker 316731970 that has no resistance when using pull starter


If the engine has no compression(resistance), it may have a bad head gasket or piston/cylinder damage. If you remove the exhaust muffler on the engine, you can see the piston thru the exhaust port to see if it has damage. Remove the spark plug from the engine and pull the starter rope slowly while looking into the exhaust hole (the area that the muffler was just removed from). If the piston is good it should look like just a round piece of clean aluminum with a few piston rings on it. It the piston is bad it will probably have many vertical scratch like lines on the lower half of the piston. The piston may also have multiple metal looking colors other than aluminum on the lower piston. It is common for many to damage the engine by mixing the fuel/oil mixture with to little oil or even the incorrect oil type.

I have a 2003 dodge neon interface motor have you heard the pistons bending when the water pump goes out?


pistons are just blocks to fill up the hole. The rings do the sealing of the block or piston to maintain compression. When the water pump goes out then the engine overheats and the rings soften and break scoring the cylinder walls . In really bad cases the rings may seize and break the lands out of the pistons but pistons do not bend. Con ( connecting rods ) will bend if there is an excess of water allowed into the combustion chamber and when the piston comes up and there is not enough space left for the piston to go over TDC then the con rods will bend /break and if really bad will bend a crankshaft. It is an interference motor and if the cam belt breaks then the pistons will hit and bend the valve heads as the pistons hit the open valves

A bad piston could cause you to have zero compression on one cylinder, or making alot of noise, or both.

I have a mercury 9.8 outboard that I have changed the impellor in and it still isnt getting constant water flow. It seems to have a constant ticking and just squirts water. What should I check?


The constant ticking sound may be a bad piston from the last time it got hot. This is not good. Check the compression to test for piston damage. If you have a bad piston, you will find the bad water flow while solving the piston problem. You may have a piece of old impeller stuck in one of the little channels some where.

My Bostitch N12 won't advance nails


It could be the o-rings for the feed piston but a bad feed spring will also cause problems. that would be the easiest place to try if you can find a spring. Many of the parts for these are becoming NLA (no longer available) from Bostitch. One problem they had in the feed piston area was chipping the nose where the orign seals the piston stem. There is a small bumper on the inside of the feed piston cap that goes bad and allows the piston to travel to far back which slams the feeder against the lower housing and can chip it where the piston goes through.

Has no compression but the cam chain is not broken!


Loss of compression can be due to a bent head, bent valve not closing all the way, bad head gasket, hole in the piston, dropped piston, bad or broken piston rings, compression checked on cylinder with valve in the open position.

1998 nissan altima has low compression on one cylynder


Might be a bad cylinder head gasket at this cylinder. A radiator compression test can find the problem. Might be a bad valve, or a frozen (stuck) piston ring, or broken piston ring. To isolate the problem to the valves or rings, you have to add a little 30 weight oil inside cylinder through spark plug hole. Repeat the compression test. The oil temporarily seals the piston rings. IF the compression is still low then you have a bad valve. Good luck.
