Replace the spokes on my huffy 18 speed 27 inch bicycle

building and truing wheels is a specialized skill that takes a lot of practice. Most manufacturers use robots to build the wheels to save on labor costs. To have a human build a wheel can cost more than $50 per wheel for the labor. Spokes retail for about $1-$2 a piece and include a brass nipple. Spokes also come in different gauges. Most bike shops that sell spokes usually only carry a few sizes in stainless steel.

If you are only replacing one or two spokes you can take the broken spoke to a bike shop and they can measure it and hopefully have the right size in stock to sell you a replacement. Use the right size spoke wrench for your spokes to unscrew the nipple from the broken spoke, you will then be able to remove (spokes can be very flexible and will bend a lot to get them out of the hub). Observe the adjacent spokes and the lacing pattern to re-install the spoke in the hub and thread it into the new nipple that came with the replacement spoke. Put the wheel back in the frame and use the brake pads as a reference guide to tighten and true the adjacent spoke nipples until the wheel no longer rubs on the brake pads and you are satisfied.

My personal opinion is that on a Huffy, it is faster, cheaper and easier to buy a replacement wheel from your local bike shop for $35-$45. The spokes, rims and hubs used on Huffy's are of very low quality (most don't even use stainless steel spokes) and a new replacement wheel from your local bike shop (LBS) will be ten times better than trying to fix the old original equipment, IMHO.

Broken rear axle

If you have the right spanner wrenches and a freewheel removal tool and chain whip you can repair it yourself, but if you had those tools then you probably wouldn't have posted here. So your best bet is to take it to the local bike shop to have the hub overhauled. There are many different size axles and they will need to see it and make sure to order the right length and size, plus you will probably need new bearings. You are looking at about $10-20 in parts and about $10-20 in labor. Most bike shops can sell you a complete new wheel (minus the tire, tube, rimstrip, and rear cogs) for about $40 and up that would be in the Sorrento quality range. Usually we see broken rear axles when the bike has been jumped and if the force was great enough to break a hard steel axle, it probably flattened a portion of the soft aluminum rim too (not always, but I'm just saying what typically happens) so perhaps just buying a new rear wheel is the most cost effective fix and quickest too. If the LBS has the wheel you need in stock they can swap it out in a matter of minutes versus waiting a week or more for parts to come in from a supplier and the hour plus it would take in labor to rebuild the hub.

My bike got crushed by the garage door: back linear tektro bent to side and wheel spokes broke, wheel looks bent. Is this a costly repair? Ladies wildwood. Thank-you.

What's the whole bike cost? Normally every part of the bike except the frame is replaceable economically - which is subjective.

Tektro brakes or equivalent - cheap; wheel - probably cheaper than a rebuild; labor - unknown.

If the frame or the brake bosses are bent - fuhgetaboudit. Take it to a Bike Shop for evaluation. They can just hang new wheels on it and see how straight everything else is.

Front wheel wobbles

More than likely the wheel is out of true. There are 2 choices,

1 Buy a spoke wrench and attemp to true the wheel. You can do this by spinning the wheel to locate the spot where the wheel goes furthest to one side then tighten the spoke coming from the opposite side. Do this slowly 1/2 turn at a time. Do not over tighten the spoke. It may be necessary to loosen the other side slightly.

Alternate spokes between both sides of wobble.

2 Take bike to a good local bike shop to be tuned and have the wheels trued. Most shops offer a tune up at low cost. A well tuned bike will last a long time.

My bike got a wobbly tire basically right when i bought it

The cheapest way is to buy a new tube to see if that was the problem. Sometimes tubes can inflate bigger at one area than others. If not check to see if the rim is true, meaning that it is not bent, if so replace. It could also be the tire.

If the gears will no longer go back on the bike, I would recommend buying a new wheel (including a new rear hub). It is usually easier and more cost effective to buy a wheel than to replace the hub. To replace the hub (the part that is stripped on your bike) you would also have to remove and replace spokes, etc. Search online for the wheel size you need (probably 26" - you can check the tire size) or take to a reliable bicycle shop and they will gladly help you. Anyway, you need a new hub but probably better off getting a new wheel - much easier.

Childs 12 inch mongoose is new, but back wheel does not spin prop

The bikes are pre-assembled by a machine that overtightens the rear axle.  I had the same problem with my daugher's 12 inch huffy princess bike and my other duaghter's 16 inch Schwinn bike.  If you loosen the nuts on the back axle it fixes the problem.  I have read that the idea thing for these bike is to have them re-assembled and re-lubricated by a bike shop, but I thought this might cost as much as I paid for the bike.
