Which way to turn the reserve tank switch on

There are 3 positions (as you probably know). Reserve, on and prime. Under normal conditions with a properly working fuel tap, prime is the by-pass that allows fuel to flow through without the engine running. On and reserve will only allow fuel to pass when the engine is running (uses vacuum from the carb).
  • PRIME has the handle facing down
  • ON is when it is facing the front
  • RESERVE when it faces the rear.
Do not leave the tap in the prime position EVER as this allows the fuel to fill the carb and with the engine running or attempting to start will cause hydrolock that will bend the pistons con-rods. Only use it to fill the carb with fuel and turn it to on or reserve as soon as you can.
If the bike runs using the prime position but will not run when on or reserve, then you may have a vacuum problem or a dodgy tap......assuming you have fuel that is.
Hope that helps.

My Craftsman PYT9000 garden tractor starts and then dies

There is a fuel cut off solenoid located on the carburetor fuel bowl. This can fail sometimes and stop the fuel from entering the Carb. Also check for pinched fuel line, clogged fuel filter. Some models have a second reserve tank. Check for tank selection valve. Hope this helps.

2005 Honda Activa stops all of sudden while driving

Hi, Rajeshkha869 and the usual suspects are:
1. Severely discharged or a damaged battery should have 12.5 volts or more and be able to pass a proper "LOAD" test if necessary, you may have a preliminary reading of 12.5 volts or more but little or zero amperage the battery is faulty and must be replaced, AGM batteries fail in this scenario more so than lead-acid batteries.
2. Failed alternator/generator and or voltage regulator.
3. Loose or corroded battery terminals and or cables especially the "NEGATIVE" cable, look for loose, corroded, or broken connectors inside the cable harness at "BOTH" ends.
4. Failed main circuit breaker or ignition switch, check for loose connections and continuity.
5. Failed system and or ignition relay, check for continuity.
6. Failed ignition coil, stator, magneto, ignition/electronic module.
7. Failed CKP, CPS, CMP, MAP, TPS, or BAS sensor, corroded, loose or broken wire connector pins/sockets.
8. Throttle cables and or idle speed improperly adjusted hot idle speed should be 950 RPM to 1000 RPM.
9. Faulty neutral, side stand or clutch lever safety switch.
10. Air/fuel mixture screw improperly adjusted.
11. Accelerator pump damaged or not working.
12. Water or dirt in the fuel system, carburetor or filter.
13. Restricted, blocked or kinked fuel line.
14. Fuel tank empty.
15. The gas cap is not venting properly or fuel tank venting system blocked.
16. A failed fuel pump, pressure regulator and or fuel injectors.
17. Vacuum line from intake manifold to petcock broken, cracked, or not attached, carburetor vent line plugged.
18. Needle and seat stuck closed in the float bowl.
19. Lean angle switch is faulty or needs adjustment.

How does the fuel reserve function on my 2002 v max? Does the switch stay in the on pos. meaning fuel is on or does this mean I have the reserve on?

There are two 'pipes' that stick up into the tank from the fuel valve. Your fuel valve has three positions ... Off (obvioius), On (connected to the longer pipe) and Reserve (connected to the shorter pipe) If you run on 'reserve', you wilol run out of gas.

The longer pipe sticks further up into the tank ... when the fuel drops to this level, you immediately know because the engine stops running. Flip to reserve and you switch to the shorter pipe which immediately takes suction.

Fill your motorcycle every 100 miles and you will always have fuel and never have to rely on the reserve.

My audi 80 1991 has irregular running engine. Varying idle speed and sudden stops. Sometime hard to start

clean the throttle body inside. check the idle airspeed control valve,(iac) is ok....check the sensor wires located on the air cleaner assembly if the air flow sensor is gone,it will not run proper. start with a good tune up ....correct plugs, wires cap rotor.fuel filter and pcv valve..check all the vacuum lines are tight.

Lurching but not out of gas

I can only offer a few guesses as what it may be, not the solution. if the bike has been sitting for a little bit you may have cause what is called gumming or varnishing. This is where the fuel crystalizes causeing restrictions... everywhere! hit up an auto store buy some sea foam carb cleaner.... i believe that what its called or similar. Drain the old fuel ( i know it sucks but a bad tank of gas can cause many problems) Fill up high octane ad some of the cleaner.. ride the hell out of it most of the varnish will flush out. also with the petcock on "on" setting. The reserve works on a system call stand pipes one taller than the other, when the fuel lever gets below the one then - its time for reserve, anyway some of these stand pipes have filters and can clog up, if you have mechanical experience, they can be taken out easily and cleaned. Lastly a problem I recently had, during mid 3s to high 4000 rpm i had a similar problem. Bad fuel equalls bad plugs, pull them, clean em, inspect them and regap them. solved my problem.... also im assuming you have a carb and not fuel injected... good luck

It has spark and fuel but it wont fire over

Remove and clean the carburetor. Clean the air filter too. Check to be sure the choke is working properly.

Please rate this solution after the work is done. Thanks!
