Brakes make a whistle noise when applied and sometimes a low grown or grinding when coming to a slow stop or start.

A grinding or rumbling noise can also be symptoms of a wheel bearing or constant velocity joint in a driveshaft. A worn wheel bearing can also cause a 'whistling' sound (as can a worn CV joint).

A grinding noise with brakes is either worn pads causing metal to metal contact on the brake disk/rotor, or the brake backing plate catching on a spinning rotor ... or a loose/missing anti squeal brake shim (they stop the pads from rattling and vibrating).

However, as you say a mechanic has looked at the brakes and can't find anything wrong .. I think I would begin to suspect a wheel bearing or constant velocity joint on the driveshaft (front wheel drive cars).

I have an intermittant grinding on the front of my 2000 Kia when I go over bumps. the wheel bearings were already replaced because of this, but the grinding continues.

It seems as though you have changed everything.

A grinding noise is associated with something turning or rubbing against something. The only other thing that springs to mind are the drive shafts, which have splined ends. The link below will show you generic images of driveshafts
kia drive joints Google Search

Each end of the drive shaft is splined. One end fits into the gearbox and the other end attaches to the road hub of the road wheel.

It's usually the hub (universal joint that allows the wheel to turn)/ wheel end of the drive shaft that wears. It may be that the grinding noise has been more pronounced when turning? And the grinding noise is coming from just one side?

A new drive shaft isn't cheap although second hand ones are readily available. replacing a driveshaft isn't a particularly difficult job.

However, it may be an idea to get somebody to remove the brake calliper/rotor/ driveshaft hub and inspect the hub/splined end of the drivehaft. What you're looking for is worn, broken or chipped splines. If all seems okay try cleaning and repacking with driveshaft grease. It's probably the hub - the bit that allows the wheel to turn - as opposed to the splines -there's bearings inside that hub (also known as a universal joint). There's no real way of examining that hub other than replacing the driveshaft

2002 Sierra: grinding/scrapping noise when turning right...

the noise is possibly coming from your driveshaft( axle) CV joint, its probably damaged thats why is making abnormal noise. i would suggest to bring it a competent garage since replacing it requires proper tooling expertise and experience and its a complex exercise to DIY.

Front drive shaft has a bad grinding noise and the rear seal has cracked and the bearings are exposed and all the grease has leaked out. do i need to replace the entire shaft and what is the diffuculty and...

If you are talking about only the drive shaft joints being bad, take it out and take it to a driveshaft repair shop. Look in the yellow pages or call a trans shop and ask who they use to check, straighten and balance drive shafts. About $150.00 and may do it while you wait. Might as well put new joints in the rear one and balance while your there.

Auto locks for front 4x4 2007 f150 cant stop grinding noise

Are you under warranty? Make it the dealers problem if its eligible.

If the front hubs are grinding regardless of being in 2wheel or 4wheel drive it can be the hub bearings which turn regardless. If it grinds only when in 4x4 then the wheel shafts or differential or front driveshaft or transfer case is making the noise because all of these parts move when in 4wheel drive.

Whining/grinding noise at deceleration

We have the same problem at our shop. We haven't rebuilt the front differential yet. We tried 3 different shafts on 2 different Jeeps and the noise is on both just the same. By greasing the front driveshaft cv joint, we got he noise to quiet some, but it is still way to loud. With the driveshaft out, the noise is gone. We are about to buy a new shaft from the dealer for $600. There are some service bulletins about some noisy driveshafts.
