Kawasaki zl 400 eliminator

I have a ZL 400. Bought as a non runner. Have got it running but can only get 1st gear. I can go back to neutral. It has clicked into 2nd a couple of times with difficulty and I can get all the gears but not consistently. Any ideas that I can try before major stripdown ?

Does the shifter still have spring tension- does it return or do you have to move it back? If not it is most likely the shift spring or cam on the shift drum. This is minor repair usually clutch cover removal. But if internal then major repair, like gears or shift forks

Testimonial: "thanks for the solution idea, yes I do have spring in the shifter lever, so we can rule that out. I wonder if the shift drum isn't turning because the "C" shape puller which engages and turns it is faulty, ?"

SOURCE: 1986 zl 600 eliminator. Quits while driving.

I had a similar problem. Mine would continue running, but it felt like it dropped cylinders. Sputtered, backfires...etc. Check your ignitor box (under the seat, attached to the rear fender. Start the bike up to operating temp, and if it does the problem, the tech that fixed mine squeezed the ignitor box, and it returned to normal. Got a new one checking salvage yards online.

Manual for 1996 Kawasaki ZL 600 Eliminator

Hi, Diane the vast majority of service, parts fiche, and owners manuals on the internet are "FREE" to download and all service manuals contain wiring diagrams in the back pages. The rest usually charge a modest fee around $10 and there is a handful of obscure, rare, obsolete, and very old models that are no longer or never were available, for these rare occasions I shall look on eBay and find the cheapest one available. Most of the manuals will cover your exact make, model, and year otherwise one will be provided that comes as close as possible to your bike and will have most of the same info that an exact manual would have. If there is no $ sign after the manual link it is free to download for viewing or printing.

Zl900 eliminator starts and runs good. when i put it into gear (with the side stand up)the motor shuts down.

It sounds like the side-stand switch is not working - check for continuity across it & for any bad contacts or broken / crushed wiring also

I have an '86 Kawasaki ZL 600_A. I'm replacing the wiring harness for the run/off switch/starter button assembly, and I need to remove the throttle cables so the old assembly can come off. How do I get...

the best way is to lossen the adjuster nuts at the carbs and then at the throttle undo the switch gear remove the bar end pull the twist grip by pulling it off the bar with the swtich grear then remove the nipples from the twist grip then remove the cables from the switch gear then refit in reverse and adust the cables should have about 3 to 5 mm of freeplay hope this helps
