Beings the CHECK ENGINE light came on, you might want to check for any error codes.

1- Turn motorcycle ignition switch to OFF & Run/Stop switch to RUN.
2- Push odometer reset button in & hold.
3- Turn ignition switch to Ignition and release odometer reset button. Background lighting will illuminate, speedometer needle should sweep its full range and indicator lamps (battery, security, low fuel, check engine and cruise) should illuminate. The word "diag" should then appear.
4 - Push the odometer reset button once and you will see the selection menu "PSSPt" with the first P flashing.
5 - Each letter represents an area of the diagnostics module. The module that is flashing is the one you are going to check. To move from one letter (module) to the next, you push the odometer reset button one time. (from P to S to SP to t and back to P, etc.)
P = ECM/ICM (Electronic Control Module [EFI] / Ignition Control Module [Carburetor])
S = TSM/TSSM (Turn Signal/ Turn Signal Security Module)
SP = speedometer
T = tachometer
6 - To get the DTC in an area of diagnostics, push and hold the odometer reset button in for 5 seconds and release. If there are any DTC's the code will be displayed or the word "none" will appear if there are no DTC's. Push the odometer reset button again to view additional codes if they exist.
7 - Record the codes.
8 - If DTC's are not to be cleared, Press and release the odometer reset button. Part number of module will be displayed. NOTE: To determine if a code is current or historic, clear the displayed code by pushing in and holding the odometer reset button ( longer than 5 seconds) until 'clear' comes up. Release the odometer reset button. Turn OFF the ignition switch. Run your bike and shut it down then recheck the DTC's again by repeating steps 1 to 9. If the code is current it will reappear.
9 - Press and release the odometer reset button to continue to the next module.
10 - Turn Ignition switch to OFF.
On models not equipped with a tachometer "No Rsp" will appear when the tachometer identifier is selected.
"No Rsp" will also appear if the run/off switch is in the off position when doing this procedure.

SOURCE: 2007 harley davidson xl sportster 883 speedometer

If you're lucky it might be the speed sensor located in the gearbox casing. This is a hall effect device and is magnetic and so can pick up metal fragments from the inside of the gearbox. I have a 2001 Sportster and the Sensor is located on the top of the gearbox casing, just below the starter. I'd expect it to be in a similar position on a later bike such as yours, but I can't be sure. Once you've located it, take it out (can be a bit fiddly) and make sure that its clear of any debris. If not the sensor, you're probably going to need to substitute in a working speedo. Be careful because a pre-2004 speedo is electronic, but is not compatible with 2007 bike. Best of luck!

SOURCE: What type of oil does a 2004 Harley Davidon XL

No, but the Royal Purple Max Cycle 20W50 will if they offer that. All Sportsters and Big Twin Harley's use 20W50 oil.

Good Luck

engine light may mean change or add oil or airfilter is dirty.make sure all hoses are still hooked up.The pause befor starting could be the battery but is more likely the start relay solenoid or the starter brushes are worn and may need cleaning or replacing.the brushes wear out and leave their dust in the starter causing the resistance in the starter to get higher over time.(slow to start spinning,and acts like battery is weak.)

Won't start

Make sure the battery is fully charged. the harley's will not start unless the battery can supply more that 10.5 volts with a load. to check this have the battery on your bike with the headlights on. you should read above 12.4volts with the lights on. and above 10.5v with the lights on while cranking the motor. its a really rew bike so can't be anything major

You could get it recalibrated now but you'd have to get it done again when you change pipes.
