I have installed a new starter on my 580C backhoe When I turn the starter switch it will not engage wheel and just akes a whirring sound Have taken it out and reinstalled it but get the same results

I can talk to you in automotive terms, I know nothing about a backhoe.
I can usually lay the starter motor on the ground, hook up jumper cables properly from starter to battery, at the least, it should kick out the starter drive gear and spin. If it doesn't kick out the drive gear, starter is faulty. I don't know if starter solenoid sits on top of starter motor? I replace as an assembly. Did you check flywheel teeth? I've never worked on a backhoe.

Bendix starter won't engage

What is year--make--model of vehicle?
Some starters you can take it off and lay it on the ground. Hook up jumper cables properly from starter to fully charged battery. At the least, it should kick out the drive gear and spin. That is a no load test. Some of the national brand auto stores will test the starter for you.

Did you check voltage and ground circuits at the starter motor. Any testing at the starter, make sure tranny is in park or neutral and the parking brake is set.

Turn key. starter engages flywheel engine start to turn over. Then starter disengages form flywheel but continues to spin without care actually starting.

There maybe a problem with starter motor? Some of the national brand auto stores will test starter for you. Of course, you have to take it off and take it to them.

You could take the starter off, lay it on the ground, Hook up jumper cables properly from starter to battery. The starter should kick-out the drive gear and spin. If starter drive gear kicks out and in, something is wrong. Anymore I replace starter solenoid and starter motor as an assembly.

It wouldn't hurt anything to check flywheel teeth while your at it.

When turning key starter turns over but not engaging

if starter just spins and does not engage flywheel. it is usually the starter solinoid not kicking it out. when energized the solinoid, if good. kicks the starter gear into flywheel to turn engine over to start it. good-day !

Installed new starter, and it won't engage, just spins up. I inherated the car, it had a new engine and clutch installed in 2009, and it has been a on going problem. thanks db.

If it just spins when you turn the key, either the Bendix gear is not kicking out the starter gear, or the flywheel/flexplate hs broken or missing teeth. Was the old starter 'shimmed'? If so, did you put the same number of shims back in when you installed the new one? It is possible your starter, even though it is new, is not working properly-rebuilt units can be defective out of the box.

84 FXST Starter Kicks out before engine fires

I'd be willing to bet that it's not "kicking out". The tale tell sign is that the starter keeps running. As long as the plunger in the solenoid is pulled inward, which moves the starter drive into engagement with the ring gear on the outer clutch drum, the start will run. If the starter drive were being "kicked out" the solenoid wouldn't still be engaged and the starter would not continue running.

I would come closer to thinking that your starter drive is bad, the bendix. These things are notorious for going bad, especially the cheap Chinese made aftermarket ones. I've replaced them with only a few weeks use on them. If you buy a new drive, get an Accel, made in the U.S.A.. Simply pull the starter drive out and clamp the shaft in a vice with aluminum jaws on it. The little nut on the end has left handed threads. When you put the nut back on, put some Red Loctite #271 on it. This ought to solve your problem. If you have anymore questions, drop me a line directly at wd4ity@bellsouth.net Good Luck!

My 00 impala 3.4 doesnt start.i took the starter off and checked it out but its fine. when the key turns the starter spins but wont engage with the motor.i have a brand new battery, all cables are connected...

Does the starter kick out and spin normally out of the car? Have you checked the condition of the flywheel? Ususally the starter doesnt turn until the solenoid kicks the gear out to engage the flywheel. Check if the gear on the starter is bad, it should slip one way, and not the other.

1997 bonneville change starter and battery and still not starting i hear the starter but will not turn over what could be the problem

sound like ther starter is either not installed properly and is not engaging, or the wiring was hooked up wrong and the bendix is not kicking the starter drive into position
