Toro Timecutter model 74301 will not start. Changed spark plug and has new battery. At first it was trying to turn over. Changed battery and now all I get is a clicking sound. Checked battery connections and they are all good. What should I do?
I'm not familiar with this Toro Model, but that click sound probably is the starter solenoid engaging. Have you checked the wiring from the battery to the solenoid and from the solenoid to the starter? Also, check the ground connection on the mower frame.
You may have a bad starter motor. You can by-pass the solenoid by - placing a heavy gauge wire from the POSITIVE battery terminal directly to the STARTER terminal, where the heavy wire is attached. Be careful NOT to ground out the wire from the battery.
If the starter turns - it's a bad solenoid. If it does not turn - it probably is a bad starter motor.

Over the years my John Deere STX 38 would not start. Sometimes the starter wouldn\'t crank, other times the engine would turn over, but would not start. What the thieves at John Deere wouldn't tell me was to check the relay (under the seat on the STX 38). Because this dealer and others I have spoken with over the phone believe in making money over serving their customers I have been sold a starter, two ignitions and a coil. The problem has been a Relay all along. The Relay is a part of the ignition/starting system that has been know to commonly fail and the bottom line is it only cost fifteen dollars. Pass this on!!!
