Won't start, just clicks

Toro Timecutter model 74301 will not start. Changed spark plug and has new battery. At first it was trying to turn over. Changed battery and now all I get is a clicking sound. Checked battery connections and they are all good. What should I do?

Over the years my John Deere STX 38 would not start. Sometimes the starter wouldn\'t crank, other times the engine would turn over, but would not start. What the thieves at John Deere wouldn't tell me was to check the relay (under the seat on the STX 38). Because this dealer and others I have spoken with over the phone believe in making money over serving their customers I have been sold a starter, two ignitions and a coil. The problem has been a Relay all along. The Relay is a part of the ignition/starting system that has been know to commonly fail and the bottom line is it only cost fifteen dollars. Pass this on!!!

I'm not familiar with this Toro Model, but that click sound probably is the starter solenoid engaging. Have you checked the wiring from the battery to the solenoid and from the solenoid to the starter? Also, check the ground connection on the mower frame.
You may have a bad starter motor. You can by-pass the solenoid by - placing a heavy gauge wire from the POSITIVE battery terminal directly to the STARTER terminal, where the heavy wire is attached. Be careful NOT to ground out the wire from the battery.
If the starter turns - it's a bad solenoid. If it does not turn - it probably is a bad starter motor.

My Toro Timecutter Z5000 won't start so I changed the spark plug but the replacement won't tighten. It's the right size listed in the manual. When I used starting fluid the entire plug popped out.

Sounds like you may have stripped the thread in the head when retightening the new plug :( Can be repaired by using a helicoil, however, quite likely, the head will need to be removed to do so to ensure no junk falls into the cylinder.

Toro timecutter rough idle, backfires, loses power when blades engaged. Spark plug is gapped correctly, have even changed spark plug with no change.

might check the valves to see if they are set correctly and push rods not bent. turn engine over by hand to be sure valves are opening and closing . or check the flywheel key. if it has sheared it will cause it to back fire as the timing will be off.

Why doesn't my toro timecutter z5030 start?

First make sure all battery cables are clean and tight and it could be the starter or starter solenoid if battery is ok..

Toro Timecutter model 7436 will not start. Changed spark plug and has new battery. At first it was trying to turn over. Changed battery and now all I get is a clicking sound. Checked battery connections...

Clicking sounds like an almost dead battery, charge the battery and try again,if you have a crank sound after charging and no start, you are looking at a faulty coil.
good luck

Toro timecutter won't turn over with key

Sounds like the solenoid is bad. Most solenoids connect positive + from the battery. One side will read 12 volts (with the black wire of a test meter or test light. (The side connected to the battery). Energize the solenoid (loud click) And with the key held, check the other side for voltage. No voltage, bad solenoid. Be careful when you buy a replacement. Many look the same but do different things.

Toro Timecutter 14.38Z Model 74301 Briggs & Stratton Engine Model 280H07-0166-E1 Has NIKKI carb Starts & runs for ~ 15 minutes then stops. Will restart after 5 minutes rest and run...

Recheck spark when the unit cuts out. I am gonna guess you spent a lto of money chasing a bad coil! When a coil starts to go bad they become temperature sensitive. Time does the rest!

Trouble starting and a lot of black smoke at startup

Could be. Black smoke means too muck fuel or not burning properly. Also make sure your oil is not over full.
