Looking at buying a 99 Tahoe

Ok here is the deal I am looking at buying a '99 Tahoe 4x4 with the 350 vortec it has around 170,000 miles. Now the guy said that the left side freeze plug (under the motor mount) is leaking and it looks as it something ''poked'' it. Now I know parts will have to be taken off and the motor lifted to replace this. I have a mechanic that says he would do this for $250. A/C works 4x4 works etc......... I was just concerned about down the road major problems. He has replaced some of the things that you would expect and has had regular service. I was just wondering with that many miles is the vehicle worth $2,500? Thanks alot

I know what it is "worth". So I guess what I'm asking is $2,500 just a small start to any known major problems that high milage vehiles like this Tahoe may have.

Just chipping my two cents in. I purchased a 99 Tahoe, anyway, other than what you have going on now they are pretty good vehicles.Mine had about 120,000 miles on it when I purchased it in 2005 and I have only had a few problems since then. Replacing fuel pump, brakes, and tires. If you can get a list of regular maintance on the vehicle it is probably a good vehicle. I knew personally the previous owner and consequently know all regular mantanence was completed since the original purchase.

Buying 2001 RX300 65,000 miles extra clean

If you aren't mechanical, have someone who is check the car out. Specifically, the transmission fluid for color and smell (On toyota's they are to be changed every 30K miles, few drivers do this), and pull the spark plugs to see if they all appear relatively clean (a burnt looking plug indicates an engine problem). Ask to see the maintenance records. Oil should be changed every 3-4,000 miles if regular oil, 8-10,000 if synthetic.

The next BIG thing regarding maintenance is timing belt and water pump at 90,000 miles. Expect 500-700 for this, not at the lexus dealer. Probably double at the lexus dealer.

I would be interested under 12,000. Very interested under 10,000.

FYI, I'm driving a 95 ES300 with 170,000 miles and it runs like a top. These cars require very little in the way of repair if they are maintained. My goal is 300,000 just to see if it can be done. Unfortunately, I drive a total of 1,000 miles a month these days. So it will be a while. On the interior, you can have very nice new leather seats installed if the rest of the interior is in reasonable shape. Cost around $1,000 or a little less.

Good luck!!
