Check battery voatage with a volt meter. After verifying 12v or better at starter, check power at starter cable terminal and verify ground at block is good. Then put volt meter across both battery terminals and try to start car. If battery voltage shows 9.5 or less while attempting to crank, change starter.
(make sure that there is 12v at the starter trigger wire with key in "start" before replacng)
(By battery "hot" you mean it's charged, not getting hot, correct?)

OK then check what I said. (hot battery could have meant dead short as well)

Starters getting really hot, why?

In simple terms, the starter gets hot from a high amount of voltage flowing thru it.
The why part is another thing.
Could be a bad connection between the starter and the battery including the ground. Could be a problem with the engine not wanting to turn over. For example, if you broke a timing belt the engine may lock up.

It will turnover but will not start unless i jump it . new bat. & new bat. cables . I did a tunup ,just not we not start on its owne

if the battery you just bought isn't cranking over the motor (should sound like the motor is turning over slower than before) you may have bought the wrong battery. Batteries have different ratings based on what they are used for. One thing to look at is CCA's or Cold Cranking Amps. If you bought a new battery with less CCA's than what the engine calls for, even though all car batteries are rated for same voltage, your amperage is off and isn't quite enough to give the starter the power it needs to kick over your engine. By jumping the truck, you are giving it the bit of extra power needed. Now battery cables could also be a problem.....I had a set of jumper cables that were very cheap and they never transfered power the same way as my $80 pair that had a better gauge wire...same thing for battery cables but generally this shouldn't be an issue. If you have your old battery still, look at the CCA's on the battery label and compare them to the new battery.....should be different.

New alternator and battery battery light stays on and car dies

Have you checked the alternator fuse? The regulator needs power from the fuse to turn on the alternator. The old alternator could have blown the fuse.

1997 BMW316 compact wont start. Had to jump start it with leads recently but put it down to weather. Only use it during weeks so sometimes left a few days without driving. It ticks when trying to turn...

probably not starter but weak battery when battery low on charge you will hear solenoid on starter clicking when trying to start battery on cars do lose charge in frosty weather but it means battery old or cells in bat inop just replace bat
