Had trouble getting neutral,it would go to second gear, had to be gentle to get neutral.now can't get it out of first gear, when pushing hard on it it makes a grounding noise trying to engage put doesn't. 1982 maxim 650 can't find it in catagories
Sounds like a bent shift fork. You will need an impact driver and torque wrench plus the normal screwdriver, pliers, etc.. Alternate to the special tools is taking it to the dealer and say "Fix it". I normally tell people to take it to the shop just so they don't get into such an involved project.
The motor comes out of the bike then turned upside down for removal of the bottom case. The gears and shafts gotta come out so you can get to the bad fork. There's much more but the idea is that you are better off having the shop do the repair.. Please rate this solution. Thanks

It sounds like the linkages have let go. If this is the case, then drive it to a repairer straight away. If you turn the vehicle off you might not get it started again.
Is this something that was working fine and then stopped? What's your experience level with this or any bike? Neutral would normally be a "half click" between 1st and 2nd - meaning with first all the way down, you would need to make a gentle step up on the shifter into neutral - a normal upstep would take you to second. It's not unusual to get kind of stuck there when the bike is stationary - with the bike running and in first, you should be able to release the clutch enough to pull ahead just a couple of feet...then neutral should be just a gentle upstep away.
This bike and many of the 600 class lose 2nd gear and slip out on hard acceleration, then at easy acceleration as it wears more and eventually the kicking out of gear can bend a shift fork, the parts are not extremely expensive but the labor is going to be high because of a complete removal and teardown.
My dad's Revo had the same problem. What happened was the little piston that the engage the gear is stuck and when you pull the lever to dis-engage the gear to neutral the piston stuck no matter how much force you use. What I did was take a flat head screw driver and can to WD40, spray some WD40 directly on to the piston let it sit for 10 second the WD40 to penetrate, then take a flat head screw driver try to lift the piston to dis-engage while pulling the lever up. You will need to remove the left wheel to see the clutch assembly. Good luck.
did it work before? if so it may be that the clutch was not bled properly. if you can have someone gently push on the truck and let it go creating a rocking motion while you try to put it in neutral. if it goes into neutral the clutch was not bled correctly
the yzf600r has a large gap between 1st and 2nd gear. if you don't shift into second firmly every time, what happens it that over time the dogs which engage 2nd gear gets worn/rounded off, and the "falling out" starts to occur during hard acceleration in 2nd. once the problem is there, the only way to fix it is to replace the affected gears: 2nd and 6th ( the gear 2nd slides in to), the shift fork, and the shift cam.
this requires a complete teardown and splitting the cases. about $3-400 in parts, depending on where you purchase them, and 8-12 hours labor depending on your level of expertise.
basically that problem comes from "banging" gears. that bike is 23 years old.its likely the shifting forks are bent to the point of just getting it into 2nd. only fix is to replace them. if they havent been replaced since the bike was new, its outstanding its only starting now. beware, if not replaced soon, its possible you may end up losing your 2nd gear. hope this helps..
wasn't a bent fork, trannie chain guide broken
