Hi had my FZS00 (1999) for about a year. Its done 26k. Sometime it wont start and needs bumping, but this is completely random. I can ride for hours and be ok, stop, then have to bumpstart it, then continue and it stops then starts fine! I have had a full service and the mechanic checked all connections, Ive just had a new battery fitted and it needed bumping twice yesterday. I intend to ride to France on my own in a few weeks, so now hubby wants me to get rid incase it happens when Im on my own in rural France (for 6 weeks) I am concerned too, but like my little fazer. As the problem is so intermittent, how can the fault be traced? Is there anything I can try before getting rid? Cheers Jane

    Thanks guys. Thing is is happens really infrequently, so may be weeks before it happens again!!!! Yesterday I stopped for petrol, then it wouldnt start (there was clicks when start button pressed) a mate pushed me in 2nd to start it up, then I continued for a few miles, and it completely cut out at a T-junction. completely dead no clicking with start button this time. Bumped it again, rode home 10 miles. parked up and it restarted fine.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

With the indulgence of goofduck...

If what you are referring to as "it wont start" means it will not crank, then it would be either as what goofduck posted or the starter relay. On the next instance of it will not start:

  • locate the starter relay (follow the + cable from the battery);
  • Press on the start button, there should be an audible click;
  • While still pressing on the start button, short with a wrench the 2 big terminals underneath the rubber cap (on the nuts not on the threaded portions).
Results:
  • if there is no click when pressing on the start button, either the relay is faulty or the interlocks (most likely) or the start button (less likely) are faulty;
  • if the starter motor would engage, then the starter relay is faulty, more specifically the high current contacts;
  • if the starter motor will not engage, then the motor would be faulty.

Would appreciate a postback on results of tests or updates on any developments.

Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.

Hi, I have a 2006 gas gas ec300 and it has done 90 hours of trail riding. Should I be looking to replace piston and rings? It still starts 1st kick and seems to run perfect. Thanks go the gasser

Be sure to change the piston and rings sometime around two years from now, but only if you want to. So long as the engine doesn't seize up due to lack of oil in the gas, the piston and rings should last for years. Please rate my answer.

Bike only bump starts, on my honda cbr1000

The alternator is not affected by not being used for awhile. The battery is affected. I would bump start the bike then take it on a good long ride to allow the alternator a chance to recharge the battery. Alternate to the ride would be putting a 1 or 2 amp trickle charger on the battery for 3 hours or so. If the battery does not want to take a charge, consider how old the battery is. If it is 2 years or more I would suggest a new battery. Motorcycle alternators seldom fail.
