89 Ford F150 shuts off when put in gear.

Been sitting up over 2 years. Only has 79,000 miles, but needs new gas tank I was told last year. Even though there's no gas on the ground and no fluids leaking anywhere I'm not sure I need a new tank. It was starting fine and I could move it from one side of driveway to the other, a little sluggish but I could move it. When I turned it and tried to back it kept shutting off. Gas gauge doesn't work but I put 3 gal. gas, 1 qt. oil, has water in radiator also new battery. Starts fine and idles okaybut when I put it in gear it shuts off and white smoke comes out of tailpipe, and has a popping sound. It starts right back up and runs okay, and same thing happens. Any advice?

After sitting 2 years, there must have been some fuel in tank that has probably gone real bad (like shellac) and contaminated the fuel system, plugged up filter etc. Usually rust will form in tank, mixed with stale fuel, it will turn just like mud.

Unfortunately it usually requires removing tank & washing it out to be sure it's all out of there. We did get away a couple of times on vehicles that sat too long by adding a couple of bottles of lucas fuel system cleaner, or similar, then add a full tank of fresh fuel, and change fuel filter before and after running through a couple of tanks of fresh fuel. A lot depends on how much fuel was in tank when stored. If it was a lot, you may never get it all out without dropping the tank.

89 f150 will start but after choke let's idle down it dies or if you even touch the gas. It had sat up for 5 years but the first time I got it started it drove for over an hour.

The damage is already done. Gasoline breaks down within 1 year. Drain and flush the old fuel out of the gas tank(s). Try adding Chevron Techron fuel injection cleaner to the replacement gas. That may work. However, you probably need to remove all the fuel injectors [if it's a fuel injected engine] and have them sent out to be professionally [ultrasonic] cleaned and tested. Fords are notorious for fuel injector problems. Also do a fuel system pressure test, as the bad gas may have damaged the electric fuel pump [located in the fuel tank(s). For a carbureted engine, you will need to have the carburetor overhauled or replaced with a rebuilt unit. NEVER let a vehicle sit unused for more than 6 months without first treating the gasoline. I always add a fuel stabilization product like Sta-Bil to the fuel, if the engine will not be run for at least 2 months or more. Adding these products after the fuel has gone bad [is already old] will not help. Then it's to late. Below is a link for Sta-Bil. I've used this product for over 20 years. It will save a LOT of grief, when storing vehicles or gas powered lawn equipment. See

My 89 ranger has been sitting for 7 years. i got a new battery for it and it will crank but will not start. i am not sure where to start looking to fix the problem. before it sat it ran like a champ.

Hi,
Is it getting gas and fire?
If so and you don't have fresh gas in the tank, I would suspect some bad gas after sitting for 7 years.
Hope this helps. Good luck!

Got some gas at Kroger, engin off;; had driven less than 5 miles made one stop, engin off;; a mile later loss power, check engin lite on, it started after a minute;; two miles on did it again;; got to store...

Remove the fuel filter and empty it into a glass jar...If you see any water at the bottom, likely there is far more in the tank (there is at least a gallon or more below the fuel pickup) If there's water in there tank needs to be drained and cleaned.

90Cadillac Brougham has been sitting

Replace all your fluids including the gas. Even if the gas looks good it can still be bad and will make the car run horrible. Oil needs to be changed just sitting everything has broken down same with tranny fluid. Change the tires and check the suspension and the shocks. Very nice car though. Just do the normal maintance on it. Filter, oil, tranny fluid, spark plugs, tires normal

Restoring a 89 Ford Escort

If your car has been setting for 2 years, many of the seals and other rubber components are shot. If you have not started it in those 2 years, it's really very questionable if it's worth trying to get running again and needing it to last 5 years. You may want to seriously consider getting a different vehicle that is already running. My brother had a car that sat for 3 years and a mechanic told him it would cost too much to repair it. He told him to junk it and get money for parts. Good Luck!
