How do you switch fuel to reserve on a Harley davidson sportster

Hi Anonymous, if you have a carbuerator the petcock/fuel valve is located on bottom rear of the left side of the fuel tank. With the long end of the lever pointing straight back the fuel valve is in the off position and no fuel will flow to the carbuerator, with it pointing straight down the valve allows fuel flow from the gas tank to the carbuerator, with it pointing straight forward it is in reserve mode and you have roughly 1/2 to 1 gallon of fuel left in the gas tank. If you are fuel injected the is a low fuel warning light either on the dash or speedometer. If you have a fuel gauge refuel before it hits empty just like your car. Good luck and have nice day.

My mechanic explains to me I need a replacement carbuerator for my 85 Toyota pickup. He exp;ained to me that 85 was the year in which upon importation a "simple" carbuerator became very complex...

if you changed the carburator then what would he do with the computer and emissions stuff he left unconected. just take the car somewhere else and have it rebuilt. or if your good at following instructions you can buy a rebuild kit for it from any auto parts store and do it yourself. just rem it goes bk together the sameway it came apart.

Have a 96 883 sportster- i have to use a squeeze dropper to inject gas into the carbuerator to start it. have to do several times while working the choke to get it to stay running and warm up. as it idles...

It sounds like the carburetor is plugged with gasoline varnish from sitting. It takes as little as just a few months of sitting for the carburetor to become clogged. If this is the case, the carb needs to be disassembled and soaked in carburetor cleaner. Upon reassembly, be sure to blow everything out with compressed air - and make sure you can see through the jets. You can test your luck by draining the fuel and whatever contaminants have collected in the float bowl. Sometimes, that will work wonders.
You should also check for air leaks between the carb and the engine (loose clamps, cracked manifolds, etc.). Spraying WD-40 on those areas with the engine idling will help determine if there are any intake leaks (the idle speed will fluctuate when WD-40 gets sucked in).

I have fuel dripping in the front near carbuerator

Most often the leak is at the fuel line connection at the carb. Replace this gasket and check the fuel filter at the same time. Do not use thread sealant! Do not drive it with this leak!! Frankster016
