SOURCE: specs and oil capacity

Most owners of the old Ironheads try to use the oils that were used when they were built. They use straight 50 weight when the weather is cold and 60 weight when temps are hot. But, one could use 10W50 oil in them. I would not use synthetic as any oil leaks will intensify with the use of synthetic oil. The XLH, XLX, and XLS tanks hold three quarts with the exception of the XR1000 which hold two quarts.

Is it worth rebuilding the top end of a 1980 Sportster?

Hi, Randy that all depends on its overall condition, whether or not you or a shop/dealer are going to do the work and how much "DRACHMA" you have in your wallet, in excellent condition the bike can sell for $8,000 depending on your zip code for more information about your issue and valuable "FREE" downloads that you will need please click on the blue links below and for more specific information or questions at no charge please feel free to contact me at xlch@mail.com. What's the highest I can raise my handlebars on my 07 sportster 883xl without needing to extend wires or cables

Hi, David that's an easy one just remove the riser top clamps and pull up on the handlebars then have a friend measure the distance from the bottom of the handlebars to the top of the upper fork bracket/triple tree and that's the length of the new risers you will need for more information about your issue and valuable "FREE" downloads that you will need please click on the links below, and for specific information or questions, please feel free to contact me at xlch@mail.com. I'm fixing a 83 Harley-Davidson sportster. The last owner changed the handlebars and they are loose in the tripletree. what might be the problem?

If they are loose in the upper triple tree, you need to simply replace the riser bushings in the triple tree. Look under the triple tree and you'll see either two large bolts or two large nuts. If you take these off, you should see some rubber bushings that the risers go down through. If the bushings are worn or have gotten old and spongy, simply buy some new bushings and replace them. If the handle bars are loose in the handlebar clamp, take the clamp top off and see if the handle bars are knurled or have ridges cut in them. If not, they've put the wrong bars on the bike. You may can make a thin shim and put it around the bars and tighten it up a bit. If this doesn work, replace the clamp and risers.

Good Luck
Steve

How can i tell if i have a sportster hugger or just a sportster 883?

The difference between the 883 and the hugger were very small. the hugger came stock with buck horn handlebars and a shorter suspension. the differences are still noticeable today between a standard 883 and and 883 low.
1992:
  • Hugger model made even lower
  • Standardized hand controls
  • Production Information:
  • XLH 883 $4,499
  • XLH 883 'Hugger' $5,075
  • XLH 883 'Sportster Deluxe' $5,559
  • XLH 1,200 $6,400
also check your vin number if you have and 883 it should read 1hd4cam........ or for a hugger 1hd4cem....
