Hi, Anonymous and the usual suspects are:
1. Fouled spark plugs.
2. Severely discharged or a damaged battery, should have 12.5 volts or better and be able to pass a load test if necessary.
3. Check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
4. Loose connection at ignition coil or plug between ignition sensor and module.
5. Spark plug cables in bad condition, shorting / leaking, spark plug cable connections loose.
6. Faulty ignition coil or electronic control module or CDI box.
7. Faulty CKP, CMP, or BAS sensor.
8. Faulty ignition switch.
9. Tilt sensor needs a reset.
10. Security alarm failing to disarm needs reset

If you have continuity from the coil to the ignitor, the problem lies within the ignitor. The coils function by having a constant battery voltage on the red/black wire (you'll notice that ALL the coils have a red/black wire) - the primary windings in the coil charge up, until the ignitor "grounds" the colored wire (grey and white in the front, orange and yellow in the rear). As the voltage in the primary winding drops, it creates a strong magnetic field - the magnet (laminated iron) in the center of the coil charges the secondary windings, and the very high voltages generated fire the plug. You've already determined that the voltage on the orange wire is higher than the voltage on the yellow wire; that could only be because the orange wire is not being "grounded" on a recurring basis by the ignitor. (You have to remember that the meter you're testing the leads with cannot react to changes in voltage nearly as quickly as they happen; to really "see" what's happening at the coil, you'd need to use an oscilloscope).

Not James, but maybe I can help: Under the dash in the fuse/relay box is the ignition coil relay. This sends battery voltage on the black/white wire to all four coils. With key in on, all 4 coils should have power to them on this black/white wire. If no power, check fuse #2, a 15 amp fuse which sends power to the ignition coil relay, and on to the coils when the relay is energized by the ecu/pcm. Only thing else to cause spark is when the ecu/pcm sends a signal to the coil's Ignition Control Module (housed inside each coil assembly), which controls the primary circuit (the black/white wire), and causes high voltage to the spark plugs.

So check the black/white wire to the coils. If power there with key in on, check for spark at a spark plug when cranking the engine over. If power to coils but no spark, possibly a crankshaft position sensor or cam position sensor giving a bad signal to the ecu/pcm. Good luck.

Begin by checking fuses. Ignition, efi, fuel pump fuses. When key turned to on, do the warning lights and gauges work? That verifies switch has power and is sending power out. With key on, the coil primary wire to coil packs should have voltage.

No spark and no gas? Fuel pump fuse good? I think I would use a test light or multimeter to check that fuel pump fuse terminal has power to it with key on. If that's good, pull connector off at fuel tank and check for a voltage signal on fuel pump wire when the engine is cranking-if good signal, fuel pump needs taken out for replacement or inspection. If no signal check that fuel pump relay has power to it. With key off, pull the relay and check that one terminal has power to it-the feed wire for the pump. If no power signal at all, check maxi fuses or fusible links for a failure.

Hi, I do not have wiring diagrams for the F-750, but I'm assuming the ignition systems are similar for all trhe F series trucks. Are you getting battery voltage to the coil when the key is in run and start? If not, first verify the fuse is good. If there is a noise capacitor on the positive coil wire, remove it temporarily while troubleshooting. If that cap is causing low voltage to the coil, replace it. If you still cannot get power to the coil, the problem may be the ignition switch. If you have power to the positive coil terminal, pull the coil wire out of the distributor and lay it on the engine where it has about a quarter inch gap to engine ground. Turn the key on and momentarily jump a ground wire to the negative coil terminal to see if it will release a spark. If the coil will release a spark this way, the problem is back in the distributor. Was everything in there replaced? Please let me know if you have questions.

My 2003 honda accord v6 refuses to start. It cranks but no spark on the plug. What should i do?


Either the spark plug is faulty or the coil pack is faulty.The spark plugs get power to spark from coil packs.

If the engine has no spark, check for voltage at the coil positive terminal when the ignition key is on. If NO voltage, then problem is on the trigger side of the coil (pickup, crank sensor, ignition module or primary wiring circuit).

But If there is NO voltage at the coil itself, then in that case the problem is on the supply side (the ignition switch or ignition wiring circuit).

But if the coil has voltage, then problem may be a bad high voltage output wire from the coil to spark plugs or hairline cracks in the coil output tower.------Getting this all possibilities checked will point towards the exact faulty part which is to be replaced.----------This should help.Thanks.Helpmech.

with parking brake set and transmission in neutral or park, use a test light or voltmeter to check for voltage at coil positive terminal with key turned in start position. Connect the negative side to ground--not the other coil terminal.

If there is no voltage to the coil, check ignition fuse. If good, suspect ignition switch or wiring.

If there is voltage to the coil, either the coil or modulator is bad.
With the key in the on position, remove the coil wire from the distributor and hold it near a ground point while you briefly ground the negative coil terminal. If a spark jumps when the ground is removed, the coil is good and the modulator is bad.

1984 Ford F150 turning over but not getting fire


Good battery, good starter. Leaves spark and fuel.
1. Remove 1 spark plug wire from a plug. Hold near engine block while someone "cranks" the engine.
- Spark (yes/no)
If yes, issue is fuel. If no, remove distributor cap and check for cracks. Also clean inside to remove rust and dirt. Besure that inside of distributor cap is reasonably clean and rust free. After that, reinstall cap.
Try to start engine. IF it is exactly same symptom.....
Check input voltage to coil (high voltage source for distributor). Is 12volts present? If not, troubleshoot wiring between battery source and coil. Be sure to include the fuse for "ignition" in fuse box.
If yes.....Confirm high voltage is present at center (input) wire to distributor (CAUTION:- 30,000 volts could be present... do NOT touch bare wire.) Use insulated plyers or similar to place this center wire near engine block to check for spark. Note that this voltage source is powered on as soon as the ignition key is in the "run" position.

Replace coil if no high voltage is coming out. Replace distributor cap and rotor if high voltage is coming in to it, but not leaving and getting to spark plugs.

Confirm fuel is getting to intake.
I spray starting fluid into intake while cranking engine. It will "fire" if all else is good.
If it "pops" or fires, then you have a fuel feed problem... between tank and intake manifold, shoot fuel filter, fuel pump and otherwise confirm that gas is moving to intake from gas tank.

The twin cam engine has a compression sensor on it and if you try to check for spark by taking the plugs out of the engine, you won't have a spark. You need to leave a set of plugs in the engine and put another set in the wires.

If you still don't have a spark, check for voltage going to the small terminals of the coil. You should have voltage on the coil when the ignition is on. If not, check for voltage at the circuit breaker for the ignition. The ignition circuit has it's own circuit breaker or fuse. The circuit or fuse should have voltage on both sides with the ignition on. Good Luck

Initially, suggested checks on the wires:
  • black of igniter unit tied to ground;
  • orange wire from igniter to ignition coil with pulsating voltage when starting;
  • gray wire from igniter to ignition coil with pulsating voltage when starting;
  • IGN + 12 on red/white wire to igniter and ignition coils from engine stop switch;
  • IGN + 12 on red/white wire to engine stop switch coming from 10Amp ignition fuse;
  • pulsating low voltage from pickup coil between the wires black/white, white/green & yellow/red.
Postback results of above voltage tests.

No power to the spark plugs


Check first the wire connections to your ignition unit. Are they properly plugged? If all wires are good, try to measure the voltage from one of the wires to the ignition unit while the ignition key is in "on" position. If there's no voltage, have someone check your ECM. If there's a good voltage reading, try replacing your ignition unit with a good one.
