Can I use water for coolant or mix water with coolant or does my car require coolant only

Don't mix dex-cool with anything but water. If it's supposed to have dex-cool, you're stuck with it.If you want to use something else, flush out all the dex-cool.

How to Flush the Cooling System.

Normally the engine operates at 195F, unless you have replaced the thermostat with another one at 185F. If the temperature has a tendency to rise up, the reason is a partially obstructed cooling system or/and a bad thermostat. The first part of the cooling system that gives up is the heater core, because the coolant flowing channels are thin. It is the time for a coolant flush in your car. To do it right then you need time. Plan ahead for a weekend. With a cooled engine, start with the heater core hoses. Disconnect both of them, but the dirt has to go out of your car, so with a garden hose back flush it and let the dirt to get out of your cooling system. After you will get clean discharge,it is the time for coolant bottle, remove it, discharge the used coolant and clean it. The third to come is the radiator. Open the drain cook, or disconnect the lower radiator hose, and disposal used coolant properly. Now open the radiator cap and flush with water the radiator till discharge will be clear. You think that you are done? Not yet. There is half of old dirty coolant trapped in the system. Install everything, and connect all coolant system hoses, radiator, heater core and coolant bottle. Now you have to run your car with water. Fill out the cooling system with distilled water, start engine, turn on the heater high, and run till upper radiator hose get hot. That means the thermostat opens. Let the engine to cool down, open the radiator cap, and draining cook or lover radiator hose and drain everything. You can use flush detergent, if you wanted, at this stage, but flushing with detergent will add 4 more hours, because the detergent is colorless and you have to guess how many fill and drain processes to do, to get rid of it. I do not do it, but if your cooling system is very dirty you have to do it. After the last drain, fill the cooling system with concentrated antifreeze and 30% distilled water. The reason is because it is more water trapped inside the cooling system. The goal is to reach 50/50concentration. You need a coolant tester to find this. Start the engine and add coolant till radiator is full. Install the radiator cap and bleed the system. After driving you car for a day or so, let engine to cool down, open the radiator cap check the concentration of coolant with the tester, and add antifreeze or distilled water as necessary. It is a good idea to replace the thermostat while flushing the radiator. This procedure has to be done every 2 to 3 years. It is up to you to decide to use RED GM Dex-Cool or GREEN Prestone antifreeze. In all my cars I have replaced Dex-Cool with Prestone, but I flush the system every 2 years, and I never had a cooling system problem in all my cars.

Can you drive a car with just water And antifreeze in it ????

Presumably you are referring only to the cooling system on your car.
You would normally mix the antifreeze with water before topping up. Your car hand book should tell you the % of antifreeze to add to the water based upon the lowest air temperature that occurs in the place you live.
In colder climates you need a higher amount of antifreeze in the water.
The cooling system is there only to help keep the engine cool when you are driving.

How to drain cooling system

Drain the radiator while the coolant is cold. Open the radiator drain plug at the bottom driver side, where bumper meets lower rail, and drain the fluid into a 5-gallon container. If it refuses to open or broke, remove the plastic cover at passenger side and disconnect the lower radiator hose. Do not forget to open the coolant cap, which allows air to enter the radiator core. With all the fluid emptied, refill the radiator tap or with distilled water, leave the cap open, and run the engine until it reaches operating temperature. The goal here is to get the thermostat open, diluting what coolant remains in the engine but the water will start boiling, and burn you out.
Or you can run the engine to get hot but not up to the boiling point. In this case the Flush won't be perfect, but you decrease the danger to burn out. Repeat the drain/refill procedure, until you will get a clear discharge.Repeat the drain and refill procedure two more times with distilled water. The tap water contains chlorine and will corrode the radiator and the cooling system. To fill the radiator, it is recommended to ad 30% volume distilled water to 70% volume concentrated Antifreeze. If you flush the system and rinse with water you must add only 30% water to the antifreeze. There is more water trapped inside the engine compartment, because the thermostat is closed. Make sure to have a coolant density tester. When you finish one of 5 balls must sink, that indicates that you reached 50/50 strength. That means 50% Prestone and 50% Water, which will provide to your car a -34F degree FREEZE-UP Protection , and +265F degree BOILOVER protection. Make sure to open bleeding valve to discharge air pockets from the cooling system. Add coolant. The next day, while engine is cold open the radiator cap, and test the strength of coolant. If it is not quite right, then siphon coolant from the radiator and add antifreeze, or distilled water as necessary. Start the Engine. Untwist the coolant bleeding nipple. If there will be a jet or stream of coolant, that means the water pump is working and is O.K., and there are not air pocket left in the cooling system.
Good Luck.

Need to change the water/antifreeze in the radiator. How do you do that

check the bottom of the radiator for a drain plug. also, most auto parts stores sell drain kits that install a flush/drain valve onto a heater hose.

Change coolant

It is a good idea to flush the coolant evry 60000 miles, to avoid a corroded radiator or partially clodgged heater core.
Lift up the front of your car. Disconnect the lower radiator hose. Collect coolant in a bucket, and disposal properly. Connect the hose. Fill out the cooling system with water, run engine for 5 minutes , stop engine disconect the hose and discharge. Repeate this process till will get clear discharge. Rinse one more time with distilled water. Tap water has chlorine and corrode your engine, discharge. Install the lower hose and make sure the retainer is tighting up in the right spot. Keep in mind there is water trapped inside engine block (thermostat is closed), so do not use 50/50 antifreeze.
Use concentrated DEX-COOL or what is recomended for your car. Diluite with distilled water, 70% Antifreeze and 30% water. Fill out the system. Avoid air pockets. Turn engine on then stop and check the level. Add more if necessary. Do not forget to fill coolant bottle to the mark. Bleed system opening the blleding nipple. Test the strength of coolant with a tester. One ball must sink. The goal is to reach 50/50 concentration, this will protect your engine up to minus 34F degree freezing temperature.
After a day with engine cooled down, test the strength of coolant. Siphon some coolant from the system and add atifreeze or water as necessary. god luck.

I have a 98 cavalier. it runs hot after engine is runnung for a while. the fan comes on and helps it a bit but not enough. and the air from the heater inside never gets warm , where do i start? thx

It sounds like you need to service your cooling system. The cooling system may need to be flushed out due to dirty from corrosion. A sign of no heat in the heater and the engine is hot is low on antifreeze in the system. Check the antifreeze level first and add water just to get around to buy the things you need to service the cooling system. Buy antifreeze and a thermostat, drain the old antifreeze and replace the thermostat. Add new antifreeze with a 50/50 mix solution water/antifreeze. Too much antifreeze will gel and the cooling system will still run hot and to much water will boil over. Good luck. Keep me posted be glad to help.

Heater Core possibly leaking, good chance of air temperature sensor being disturbed. Check floor carpet under dash to see if its wet or sticky...sign of antifreeze! Good Luck!
